★Do You Wanna Try Taiyaki? -Japanese Fish-Shaped Cake-★

Today we made "Taiyaki"(たい焼き) at the hostel <3

P6130189.JPG

Do you know what Taiyaki is?

It is Japanese sweet, which is shaped like fish and filled with red been paste(あんこ).

Maybe some people who has already been in Japan found it around Japan :)

We will provide Taiyaki at the Japanese Performance Night on June 22nd.

?

What interesting is that Taiyaki fourtune-telling exists!

It is done with from which party people eat :)

Hiro eats from....

P6130181.JPG

It means...

You are very positive and don't care about the little things!

And you are very agressive, but somtimes become bullhead maybe><

Kyoko eats from...

P6130183.JPG

It means...

You are very careful person and can care every little things :)

And also you have always romantic ideas, but somtimes dull about the love!

Tomo eats from...

P6130192.JPG

It means...

You are very manlike and agressive sportman!

You can make a friend with everyone soon and be trusted by everyone :)

So... From which part do you eat Taiyaki?

[Guest] Bilingual Kids from Australia Love Disney 8(:-)!! [Comfortable Stay in TOKYO]

In the beginning of April, one adorable family from Australia was staying at Sakura Hostel Asakusa.

P4080036.JPG

They had lived in Kansai area for 2 years from 2011
and were spending the last fun time in Tokyo before they went back home.

All the 3 kids speak Japanese so fluently even though they hadn't learned it before they came to Japan :O
What the cutest thing is that they speak with Kansai accent!!! SO CUTE X)

Since I heard that they love Disney things and went to Tokyo Disney Resort,
I gave them a surprising gift!

It was....

mickey.jpg-jpg
The packs of snacks & the painting of Minnie Mouse!

Do you think that I'm good at painting? lol
The kids, especially the youngest girl told me "Jouzu!(=Well done!)" :)
I was so happy to hear her word and see their smile faces!

I really wish that they'll come back to Japan and stay with us again<3

[Guest] Aussie Girls Got Pretty Souvenirs in Asakusa [ Tokyo International Guesthouse ]

On the other day, two Aussie girls checked in at Sakura Hostel Asakusa.
As soon as they arrived, they showed us this pretty souvenirs!

P4070034.JPG

The portrait of Caricature!

The girls told me that they paid 5,000 YEN for the portrait with the background of Tokyo Sky Tree :)
According to my research, without background it costs only 1,890 YEN.

In Asakusa there're 2 places where you can enjoy Live Sketch of Caricature.
The shop is managed by the Japanese artist Kage who won the world championship of Caricature in 2007!

It take only 5-15 minutes to finish drawing!
I've never experienced this, but I'd like to go once to get my Caricature :)<3
And it's very recommendable for souvenir. Why don't you try! ;)

One day in the morning, our Long-Stay guest from Norway, Pia chan gave me this!

She told me that this is called "KVIKK LUNSJ" and very popular in Norway.
"KVIKK LUNSJ" can be translated as "Quick Lunch" in English, she said.
Actually this is chocolate bar and tastes like Kit Kat.

[Guest] Ukuleles Lesson with Norwegian Boy! [ Your Comfortable Stay in Tokyo ]

On the other day, one of our guest left this Ukuleles.

P3240256.JPG

When I (Kyoko) was 12 or 13 years old, I tried to learn how to play the guitar.
I gave it up because my fingers felt pain when I held the code. lol
But I thought that Ukuleles is easier to practice for me because of its small body!

Then I was thinking about how I can learn.
Actually there is no staff who can play the guitar. lol
So I decided to advertise for a person to teach me on this board.

P3230247.JPG

We set up this free board at the lobby to our guests be able to write free things like,

- I wanna go to Tsukiji Fish Market on this Saturday! Who join me?!
- Does anyone want to watch "Totoro" this evening? I rent a video tonight. Join me!

And we put some tips for sightseeing in Tokyo.

P3230249.JPG
Free Tour Information in Asakusa

Then one day a Norwegian boy came to the front desk and told us,

P3230244.JPG
" I can play Ukuleles! Do you wanna learn it?"

Wow! The teacher appeared for meeee :D!

P3230240.JPG

He taught me 4 basic codes : C, F, G, and B.
With these codes, I can play hundreds songs now!
Now I have much more incentive to practice!! Yeah

[Tourist Info] How about Hiking in Mt.Takao? [ Tokyo No.1 Hostel!]

Recently Mt.Takao has been very popular between Japanese people and foreigners

since we can enjoy hiking easily in this big urban city Tokyo.

In fact I (Kyoko) am from Hachiouji city where has Mt.Takao and living very close to the mountain!

So I cannot count how many times I have climbed up it since I was small.

It is annual event for me to go to Mt.Takao on New Year's Day.

mt.takao6.jpg

Mt. Takao is located at Takao-Sanguchi St. in 40 min from Shinjuku St by using the express.

So you can enjoy nature easily by 1 day trip!

And we can hike in Mt.Takao through all seasons.

Now I, as a Mt.Takao lover, will introduce you the ranking of "the thing to do at Mt. Takao" !

No.3!!!

Look for Tengu (Japanese Mythical Creatures).

mt.takao5.jpg

(This image is from: http://blog.goo.ne.jp/super-buchou_2007/e/1898310eb13d6b988d46b95a2d1f3d0f

Since long time ago, there is a legend Tengu is living in Mt. Takao.

They have been protecting us and the mountain from above tall trees.

If you look up above in Mt. Takao, you will have a chance to meet Tengu!

mt.takao4.jpg

(This image is from : http://blog.goo.ne.jp/komayoshi-k/e/1d3f6c1abf0c95c8ed5f03b93b46bf37)

No.2!!!

Taste Mt.Takao's delicious foods.

Hiking makes us hungry.

But, don't worry. There are lots of delicious foods in Mt. Takao!

The most recommendable dish is...

japanese wheat noodle with wild plants / [cipher]

Sansai Udon (Sansai = Mountain herbs, Udon = noodle)!

Fresh mountain herbs from Mt.Takao make it so tasty!

And another recommendation is...

mt.takao2.jpg

Baked dumpling!

Shoyu(Japanese soy souce) flavored, warm, huuuum sounds so delicious!

And finally No.1!!!

Overlook Tokyo.

From the middle of Mt.Takao, you can overlook Tokyo city!

mt.Takao.jpg

Skyscraperes in Shinjuku, Sky Tree, and actually we can see Yokohama Minato Mirai from there!

mt.takao3.jpg

Don't miss  this amazing view!!!

From now you're also the biginner of Mt. Takao lovers! ;)

[Sightseeing in Tokyo] I went to Tsukiji Fish Market for watching Tuna Auction! [Budget Hostel in Japan]

Have you ever heard about Tsukiji Fish Market?
I guess that almost all the people who is interested in coming to Japan has.
And Tuna Auction of Tsukiji Fish Market is one of the famous things to see in Tokyo.
The auction is held from 5 a.m. every business day of the market.
Lots of guests of Sakura Hostel Asakusa also go to watch it during their stay in Tokyo.

tfm0312-9.JPG

Actually I had ever been there for eating fresh sushi before but not for the auction.
And so I visited the market today very early in the morning to watch it!

To watch the auction, the first thing you need is to get the special vest for visitors.
You can get it at The Fish Information Center near the Kachidoki Bridge Entrance.
Actually you cannot reserve for the visit in advance and the first 120 people per day can watch it.

I arrived at the center about at 4:20 a.m. but there were already more than 30 people who have already gotten the vests and were waiting!
But they didn't look sleepy but look very excited! (I was really sleepy... zzz)

tfm0312.JPG

And at 4:40 minutes the number of the participants has already reached the limit!

tfm0312-1.JPG

After an hour finally I could go to the area of Tuna Auction.
It was still dark outside... Yes, it was 5:30 am! Extremely early :O

tfm0312-2.JPG
As soon as I entered the area, I felt the smell of fish and thought it was cold inside!
So if you go there,  I recommend you to bring a warm jacket especially in Winter time.

tfm0312-3.JPG

tfm0312-7.JPG
You can watch the auction from the path for visitors but cannot get close to tuna...
But you will be allowed to take a pictures without flash :) Don't worry!

tfm0312-4.JPG
This wholesale dealer was checking which tuna is better knocking with sickle.
I have no idea how much the tune costs but it must be very expensive ><

The tour took 20 minutes and there were the auction for 2 times.
It was the quite interesting scene that the merchants were calling the price loudly.

After that the tour finished, the sun was rising. Such a beautiful sky at 6:00 am.

tfm0312-8.JPG

Visiting Tsukiji for Tuna Auction is a bit hard because of the time, but I think it is worthy to watch once in your life.
And if you go, you cannot forget to eat fresh and tasty fishes in the market<3
I believe that the most luxurious breakfast can be eaten in Tsukiji Fish Market! Don't miss it!!!

[Event Report] Nabe (Hot Pot) Party on March 1 [Tokyo No.1 Hostel]

On last Friday, March 1st, Nabe (Hot Pot) Party was held in Sakura Hostel Asakusa!
24 people joined us from SAKURA HOUSE & SAKURA HOSTEL ASAKUSA and had fun time :)

We had 3 flavors of Nabe : Spicy Kimchi, Vegetarian, and Shoyu-Chicken.
In the event, we let the participants choose 1 Nabe and cook it together from the beginning.
Normally Nabe is served like that in Japan. Cooking together is one of important fun when we do Nabe!

So the participants organized teams and one of them chosen became the master of Nabe = 鍋奉行(Nabe Bugyou).
Basically the master manages Nabe and serves other members.

Spicy Kimchi team's master
Mr. Chan from Singapore!

Vegetarian team's master

[Staff] Winter Vacation in Southeast Asia [ Tokyo Cheap Hostel ]

Hello readers :)!
I am back to work from the winter vacation today.
I spent 1 week in Southeast Asia backpacking by myself.
Where I visited during my trip are Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Actually it was the first time to visit Southeast Asia for me even though I have traveled around the world before.
So today I would like to write about my trip shortly :)

The spot I arrived at first was Singapore.
In Singapore, I enjoyed walking around the town.
Orchard Road for Window Shopping

sg1.jpgのサムネール画像

Little India for feeling the Indian atmosphere

sg2.jpgのサムネール画像

The Sultan Mosque

sg3.jpgのサムネール画像

Of course I went to the Merlion Park at night
There might be no one who doesn't know about the Merlion! He's too famous!!

sg4.jpgのサムネール画像

After 1 night in SG, I moved to Melaka by bus.
The reason why I wanted to visit there is its history - Portugal has colonized this area long time ago.
The Red Square, a famous square in the center, looks like an European plaza.

ml1.jpgのサムネール画像

And I met lots of cute cats in the ruined church on the hill <3 So cute <3

ml2.jpgのサムネール画像

On next day, I moved to Kuala Lumpur by bus :)
In KL, I did lots of shopping!! Yay :)
Also I found the big Hindu Church in Little India.

kl1.jpgのサムネール画像

Actually I loved most Malaysian foods, especially NOODLES <3 <3 <3

noodles1.jpg

Curry Mee

noodles2.jpg

Baba Laksa

After spending 2 nights in Malaysia, I went to Thailand, where I had wanted to visit most in Southeast Asia for a long time!

What I wanted to do first of all in Thailand was to eat this Crab Curry X)

th1.jpg

One of my friends who loves Thailand told me that I should go to this restaurant.
It's very famous for this delicious crab curry <3
Of course it was quite delicious X9

Then my Thai friend and me drove away to Pattaya.
We enjoyed the beach & ladyboys's show there!

th2.jpg

The second thing I would love to do in Thailand is Yoga.
So I went to Wat Po in a morning because there is a free Yoga lesson in the temple area.

th3.jpg

It was first time to do Thai Yoga, but very GOOD <3 <3 <3 Loved it!

I didn't have so much time to see everything in these countries, but I really enjoyed the trip and learned many things :)

The Happiest Moment in My Work - Best Hostel in Asakusa -

Today I dropped in at Sakura Hotel & Cafe Hatagaya before coming to work.

gabrielevictor4.JPG

It was for meeting my important people :) They are...

gabrielevictor3.JPG

Rocha Family from Brazil!!

The two boys, Victor(Left) and Gabriel(Right) are sons of woman in the middle.
The brothers visited to Japan in 2011 and stayed in Hatagaya for 2 weeks.
At that time, I had just started working at Sakura Hotel.
They were my first guests from Brazil, I mean, it was the first opportunity to use my Portuguese for work!

At the last time, we joined Sticky Rice Cake Pounding Event together.
They tried mochi (sticky rice cake) at first time!

gabrielevictor.jpg
They showed us how to cook "Cocada", which is the Brazilian sweet :)

gabrielevictor5.jpg
Yes, I have very good memories with them <3 <3 <3

And they came back to Japan bringing their mother and aunt in last year and stayed in Hatagaya :)
I felt so HAPPY when I heard this news!!

Since they like Japanese characters such as Rilakkuma, Capivara-san and so on!
So I brought the petit gifts for them :)

gabrielevictor1.JPG
I was in the happiest moment in my work - the past guests came back and stay with us!

Muito obrigada por terem vido ao Japão de novo :)!!

[News] Try Traditional New Year Rice Porridge with 7 Herbs [ Cheap Hostel in Tokyo ]

*★*―――――*★*―――――*★*―――――*★*―――――*★*

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
2013

*★*―――――*★*―――――*★*―――――*★*―――――*★*

nakamiseshogatsu.jpg

Japanese New Year is very very different from it of other countries.
There are traditional food to eat, place to go, thing to do in New Year Holidays.

Today I'd like to introduce one of the tradition!
On 7th of January, after New Year holidays, we are used to eat "Rice Porridge with 7 Herbs".

nanakusagayu.jpg

It's called "Nanakusa Gayu (七草粥)".
So, what are 7 herbs?

They are...

harunonanakusa.jpg
Japanese parsley(セリ), Shepherd's-purse(ナズナ), Cudweed(ゴギョウ)
Chickweed(ハコベラ), Henbit(ホトケノザ), Turnip(スズナ), Radish(スズシロ)

Since they sprout earlier in Spring, they are considered fortunate herbs.
Then Japanese people started eat them praying state of perfect health.
Actually this rice porridge is very good for stomachache from New Year's party.

So, we are going to serve this for breakfast on 7th of January.
Breakfast time is from 5AM to 11AM. The price is 315 YEN.
Of course regular menu (toast, jam & butter, coffee, tea, and soup) are also available.

Let's experience one of Japanese custom of New Year with us <3

Remember the Christmas in 2009 in North Europe [ Tokyo Cheap Hostel ]

Merry Christmas for Everyone from Asakusa!!

☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆

I remember my Christmas in 2009 in every 24th of December.
It was the best Christmas ever in my life<3
In 2009, I spent the Christmas in North Europe because I had been living in Europe at that time.
I visited Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Yes, all the Scandinavian countries :)
Today I'd like to write about the two best spots I visited in North Europe!

1. Rovaniemi City (Finland)

2009xmas2.jpg

Our one of big object to visit North Europe in Christmas is to see Santa Claus!
Rovaniemi is famous for Santa Claus' Village and located in North Finland.
I stayed there for 3-4 days, visited the village and enjoyed the dog sled.

2009xmas4.jpgのサムネール画像

Real Santa Claus is so kind to us and spoke in Japanese a little!
I knew why he is so beloved by children of all over the world by meeting him:)

Also I found a Santa Claus shopping in the supermarket in Rovaniemi. lol
It wasn't fantasy beat, but real Santa. ehehe

2009xmas.jpg

2. Tivoli Garden (Denmark)

2009xmas5.jpg

Tivoli Garden is located in the center of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
It's the popular amusement park not only for Danish people but for foreign tourists:)
I was amazed by its gorgeous illumination! So wonderful X)

2009xmas3.jpg

2009xmas6.jpg

I remember the night was quite cold, but we had so much fun there!
The illumination might make us warmer ;)

☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆.。.:*・゚☆

We wish you a HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

[Event] Report of Sumo Academy Visit & Chanko Breakfast on 12th [Guesthouse in Tokyo]

On the other day, we held the event "SUMO ACADEMY VISIT & CHANKO BREAKFAST"!
We got together at 7:00 in the morning at the hostel! It's very early, but the practice usually starts from 7AM.

CIMG3888.JPG
We went to visit Kata-Onami Academy in Ryogoku. It takes about 30-40 min to go there from Sakura Hostel Asakusa.

CIMG3891.JPG

When we arrived at the academy, the practice had already started.
We could feel that the atmosphere was very strained... but it's so exciting!!

CIMG3893.JPG

CIMG3905.JPG
They did 4 or 5 types of trainings for 2 hours.
We could see they were sweating a lot and the training is very strict.

CIMG3921.JPG

CIMG3919.JPG

I found some manners during the practice.
For example...

CIMG3956.JPG
When stronger wrestler trained younger wrestler, younger one gives a scoop of water to stronger one.

What amazing was how different of strength between younger one and stronger one!
They are too powerful for younger one...

CIMG3939.JPG

Finally we took the photo with Sumo wrestlers :-) ごっつぁんです!
After that, the stable master answered the questions about the training. He is very strict to his apprentices but kind to everyone at the same time!

CIMG3970.JPG

After coming back to the hostel from Sumo Academy by walk,
We enjoyed Chanko as brunch :)

CIMG3972.JPG

CIMG3971.JPG
We talked about Sumo and our visit eating Chanko.
Taiwanese guest told me that his father likes Sumo :) German guests talked that Sumo is on TV in Germany and they watched sometimes when they were small.
I found that Sumo is very famous all over the world!

This event was the first time for us, but it was successful!
We are planning next one after 2013 January Grand Sumo Tournament <3
Stay tuned and join next event;)

[Travel] The End of Autumn in Kyoto [ Japanese Beauty ]

Today I'm going to write about my mini trip to Kyoto last Wednesday!

IMGP9375.JPG

It's quite good weather in Kyoto when I arrived.
And many tourists came visit for enjoying the autumn in Kyoto :)

I had decided to visit Arashi-yama (嵐山) because according to my research the autumn leaves are at the best now in Arashi-yama.
From Kyoto Station, you can go there by train in only 20 min.
When I arrived in Arashi-yama, there were already many tourists!

First of all I went to observe the mountain from Togetsu-kyo (渡月橋).
In Summer time, you can enjoy watching cormorant fishing in this river.

IMGP9403.JPG

IMGP9397.JPG

What a beautiful mountain covered with colorful autumn leaves!

Next I visited Hougon-in (宝厳院) near Tenryu-ji Temple (天龍寺).
Here is also very famous for its magnificent Japanese garden with the autumn leaves.

IMG_9907.JPG

IMG_9897.JPG

IMGP9442.JPG

IMGP9446.JPG

I couldn't help saying
"How beautiful... oh my God, who created such a beautiful garden!? Genius! ".
Actually I was really amazed by Japanese sensitive artistic quality even though I AM JAPANESE!

And I passed through the famous bamboo path to go to Joujakkou-ji Temple (常寂光寺).

IMGP9454.JPG

Some people were passing this street by rickshaw ride!
I'd like to try once in my life... <3

The tasteful Japanese gate of Joujakkou-ji Temple welcome us!

IMGP9471.JPG

IMGP9484.JPG
IMGP9486.JPG
Comparing with Hougon-in, there were more orange colored leaves there.
I have never seen such a beautiful ORANGE world! So amazing...

After enjoying the autumn in Kyoto, I came back to the main station and had this lovely cappuccino!!

latte art.jpg

Latte art of Gueishaaaaa :) <3
It was too cute to drink!! I enjoyed watching her cute smile for a while and then sipped it. lol

Kyoto is very popular to visit especially in Spring and Autumn.
So if you're going to visit during these seasons, be careful of the accommodation and the transportation!

★Cooking with Filipino Woman - Arroz Caldo(Filipino Porridge) -★

On the other day, I cooked "Arroz Caldo" with a woman from Philippines at our guest kitchen!
She is working at Sakura Hostel Asakusa as a cleaner.

CIMG3697.JPG

Arroz Calso is a kind of porridge with chicken and eggs and one of popular cuisine in her country.
Filipino people eat it in the morning. Since it's cooked with lots of chopped ginger and garlic, it gives people power!

sakagami.jpg

A long-stay Mexican guest came watch at the kitchen. She told that she wanted to learn how to cook it :)
Actually Spanish language is spoken in Philippines. So they were talking in Spanish! COOL X)

arroz caldooooo.JPG

CIMG3701.JPG
She told that,
"Please enjoy with green banno-negi onion, brown garlic, and sliced lemon if desired!"

Maraming salamat sa inyo pagtuturo sa recipe!
(Thank you very much for teaching the recipe!)

[Info] Asakusa Tourist Information Center at Night [Tokyo, Hostel]

Yesterday I went to Asakusa Tourist Information Center (TIC) at night.
Even though I'm working in Asakusa everyday, it was the first time to visit there!

asakusatic1.JPG

Asakusa TIC is located exactly in front of Kaminari-mon Gate which is the landmark of Asakusa area.

asakusatic2.JPG

It is very new tourist facility in Asakusa built in this February.

Of course there is the counter where you can ask the information in English.
And at the same floor there is Travelex for exchanging currency.

At the second floor, there are some tourist guide in Japanese.

asakusatic4.JPG

You can use Free Wi-Fi and computers.

asakusatic3.JPG
I found a nice machine to print out the photo you take now! It costs only 30 yen per 1 photograph.

asakusatic5.JPG

If you love making the scrap notebook of travel, it is very useful :)!

There are more spaces to the tourists know about Asakusa at other floors.
You can learn the history and the culture of this area by the exhibition and the short movie.

From the top of this 8-stories building, you can observe such a beautiful night view.

asakusatic6.JPG
Lighten Up Tokyo Sky Tree & Asahi Beer Building

I recommend this place for planning your trip.

[Culture] What is the meaning of your name? [Tokyo / Japan]

Do you know that Japanese people's names have own meanings ?

names.jpg

There are thousands names with different meanings but with the same way it's read all around Japan.
I think that it's very interesting for foreign people, I'll introduce the meanings of Sakura Hostel Asakusa staffs' names.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, I'm introducing our manager's name "Tomoko".

tomoko.bmp

Basically the character "子(ko)" is used for girl's name and means "child".
For some of readers from Latin countries, the names which finished with "O" are a bit strange, isn't it?
"智(tomo)" means intelligence. So whole meaning of "智子" is intelligent girl.
Yes, our manager is true to her name :) yay

So the next name is our trainee "Kento".

けんと.bmp

Kento is "人(hito)" means "person" and can be pronounced "to" for personal names.
And the meaning of "健(ken)" is sound.  So the name means "sound person" in whole.
Here is the photo that I could find in which Kento appears sounder :p (Center)

CIMG3119.JPG

At last, I'll introduce my name's meaning "Kyoko".

きょこ.bmp

Actually every time when my friends asked me the meaning of my name,
I explained it and they become a bit surprised and laugh definitely.
"子(ko)" is same as 智子. Do you know the meaning of ""?
The hint is that Kanji with "木(wood)" is connected with something from nature.
杏's meaning is Apricot !  So my whole name means "apricot child".
It sounds funny, but yammy, don't you think so? ;) ehehe

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next time you meet with Japanese people by chance,
How would you like to ask their meaning of names?

[Souvenir] Book cover with your name on it [Asakusa Info]

Last month my friends gave me this book cover for my birthday gift.

いぬ2.JPG

It is sold at the shop "Inu-Jirushi Kaban Seisaku-jo (犬印鞄製作所)" in Asakusa.

inu3.JPG

The shop sells basically the original bags hand-made with special tough cloth.
They are very strong and have good quality.

In addition of the quality, the reason why I recommend this shop is that...

犬1.JPG

You can get the products with your name on it!! w(^o^)w

At first time, I couldn't notice that there is my name on it.
But when I found it, I was very amazed and became very happy!

They have 3 shops only in Asakusa area. Of course there is one of them close to Sakura Hostel Asakusa.
It takes only 5 min by walk.

[Asakusa Info] I met a kitty in the neighborhood ^・ω・^ [International hostel]

Today I'd like to introduce a adorable kitty in our neighborhood.
Normally I can meet her when I come to work early in the morning.
She is living close to Hanayashiki Amusement Park.
I don't know her name, but she is very friendly to people.

Today in the morning, I found her exactly in front of Hanayashiki.

nekoooooo.JPG

Once I squatted on my heels and was trying to take a photo of this kitty,
Suddenly she approached to me and showed affection :D!

fotografia 2.JPG

fotografia 3.JPG

She meowed with her cute voice! Wooooh, so cute <3<3<3

If you wanna see her, I recommend you to stay at Sakura Hostel Asakusa, get up early, and just pass through "Hanayashiki Doori(花やしき通り)" to Sensou-ji Temple.
Not only meeting the kitty but walking through Sensou-ji Temple area in the morning is one of fun you can have in Asakusa!

My Asakusa in the early morning :)

Since usually I like more the quiet place than the crowded one,
I really love Asakusa in the early morning because there are few people and very quiet :)

Do you know how Asakusa is at 6:30AM in the morning?
When I come to work from 7AM, I arrived at Asakusa St. at least at 6:30AM.
And usually I pass through Sensou-ji Temple for praying the peace & the success for the day.

Here are some pictures of Asakusa in the early morning.

sensoji 725.JPG
The people are waiting for the open of the doors. They're opened 6:30AM everyday.

And so many dogs get together and their owners enjoy conversation.

sensoji in the morning.JPG
Tokyo Sky Tree looks more beautiful in the morning.

If you stay in Sakura Hostel Asakusa,

[Guest] One night at the common kitchen... [Sakura Hostel Asakusa]

Since I have already introduced several times about our nice common kitchen,
I really love seeing & joining when the guests are enjoying cooking there.

kitchen2 (1).JPG
At one night of October, 3 guests got together and were cooking something.
I and Johrel were at the front desk and could smell the whiff of chicken with soy sauce.

CIMG2939.JPG

CIMG2938.JPG
They were cooking "Tempura Chicken & Sunny Side up Egg with special sauce"

one day kitchen3.JPG
The chef gave us a piece of chicken and we tasted it.
It's very good :) I felt like drinking beer with that chicken... :p

one day kitchen4.JPG

In Sakura Hostel Asakusa, the guests make friends in the room, at the lobby, and at the kitchen.
I think that is because most of them come to our hostel by themselves only with BIG backpack.
So you will never feel lonely here!!

[Culture] How to celebrate BIRTHDAY in Japan [Sakura Hostel Asakusa]

How do you usually celebrate BIRTHDAY in your countries?

5045502202_1d867c8a41_z.jpg

Actually today is my(Kyoko) 24th birthday, so I'll introduce how to celebrate birthday in Japan!

Originally in Japan there was no custom to celebrate each birthdays, but people used to celebrate them all together on New Year's Day until 1950. That is because ancient people thought everyone get old on New Year's Day.
However, being influenced by western culture, Japanese started to hold birthday party on each birthdays.

When we are children, we usually celebrate with family and friends.
Parents hold the party at home and invite friends of kindergarten / elementary school.
It's the same thing as western culture, isn't it?!

Normally until 17-18 years old, people celebrate with family, but if young people get boy/girlfriend, they start to spend the day dating with them.
They go to the famous place for couples for example, Odaiba, Yokohama, Tokyo Disney Resort etc.

6288940138_28752b5f66_z.jpgActually if you go to Tokyo Disney Land on your birthdays, you can have special service!

And for young people it's also normal to spend birthday with school friends at restaurants, bars or clubs.
In this case, birthday boy / girl drink alcohol a lot to have fun :)

What to eat on birthdays is, of course birthday cake with candles of the number of the age and something birthday boy / girl like.
Some family prepare Chirashi-Sushi (a style of sushi where the topping is placed on a bed of rice, in a bowl).

5314747773_69c162b798_z.jpg

When I was in Portugal for a year, I held my birthday party by myself.
But I held the party 2 days before my exact birthday, and then my Portuguese friends told me,

"Generally said in Portugal, celebrating before the birthday will bring bad luck..."

Do you have any tradition like that?
In Japan we can celebrate before / after the birthday without any problem!!
Actually that is because Japanese people nowadays is quite busy and sometime cannot get together to celebrate birthday on the exact date.
So...

What do you usually do for celebrating BIRTHDAY in your countries?

[Event] Maki-Sushi Workshop Report [No.1 Hostel in TOKYO]

Yesterday we held the event "Asakusa Tour & Maki-Sushi Workshop" with TCGC volunteer guides.
Today I'd like to report on Maki-Sushi Workshop!

CIMG2896.JPG
For the event more than 30 people including TCGC tour guides joined :)

She is Ms. Keiko Higuchi, our teacher of Maki-Sushi and the artist.

higuchi san.JPG

She brought her English teacher as a translator, but she tried to explain in English and it's very easy to understand!

CIMG2861.JPG

Everybody listened to the lesson very seriously and curiously!

CIMG2863.JPG

And it's time to try it!! At first, we made "Flower Sushi Roll".

CIMG2870.JPG
CIMG2868.JPG

Making some small parts and rolling up all together then...

CIMG2876.JPG

Can you see that it's flower...? To look like flower, we need to cut it !

CIMG2895.JPG
Beautiful sushi flowers were appeared!! The students were very amazed!

CIMG2894.JPG

But it was getting more difficult because we were trying to make...

chopper.jpg

Chopper from the famous Japanese animation "ONE PIECE"!
Ms. Keiko made the original recipe only for this event.

To make Chopper Sushi, we need to make several parts.

CIMG2904.JPG

The necessary color for Chopper Sushi was PINK.
So we made pink rice with juice of red beet to describe Chopper's pink hat.

CIMG2911.JPG

When all the parts are rolled up together...

CIMG2913.JPG

...... IS THIS CHOPPER?
Most of people cannot believe that it can be Chopper.
But! if you cut and decorate it,

CIMG2925.JPG

Now you can recognize it as Chopper, can't you???

CIMG2922.JPG
When the students saw Chopper Sushi which they made hardly, they cannot stop smiling!
And also they said, "It is too cute to eat!!"

We hope all the students enjoyed learning how to make Maki-Sushi and will have chances to cook again!
Thank you very much for joining us! And we appreciate Ms. Keiko teaching :)

See you NEXT EVENT  ^o^♪

Tokyo Sighseeing : Tokyo Daijingu, the place where enshrines God for Marriage <3

Do you believe in God for marriage?

Today in the morning, I visited to Tokyo Daijingu with my friend.
Tokyo Daijingu is popular as a shrine to the god for a marriage among young people.
Actually I heard that many women have already had good meeting and got a new boyfriend after visiting this shrine.
My elder sister who got married in April also had visited there and prayed for being able to date with her present husband.
For that reason, many girls and women visit for praying everyday.

IMG_9813.JPG

Tokyo Daijingu is located in Iida-bashi. It takes only 20 min by subway from Asakusa to Iida-bashi.

IMG_9816.JPG

IMG_9819.JPG
This small shrine is located in a quiet atmosphere even though Iida-bashi is one of the area where are many universities and office buildings.

IMG_9822.JPG

Women and girls were making a line to pray though it's early in the morning.

IMG_9825.JPG

The past visitors left the mini plates with wishes like

"I wish I can get married with nice man happily."
"I wish I can date with the boy I like."

Of course I paid my compliment to the god and prayed my wish.
I prepared O-saisen(money offered to god) of 115 YEN. Can you guess why?

IMG_9820.JPG
The number 11 can be pronounced " ii " in Japanese and that means "good".
And 5 yen is normally pronounced "Go-en (Go=5)" in Japanese and the meaning is "meeting".
So I put 115 yen hoping a "good meeting" for me!

IMG_9823.JPG
And I drew Koi-mikuji (love paper fortune) and got Dai-kichi, excellent luck!!
Hummm I might get a new boyfriend in few days :D Yay!

IMG_9828.JPG

Iida-bashi is close to many famous tourist spots like Tokyo Dome, Imperial Palace, Yasukuni Shrine etc.
Also very close to Sakura Hotel & Cafe Jimbocho!
So I recommend you, especially girls & women, to visit Tokyo Daijingu when you are in Iida-bashi :)
You'll get kind of energy from God like me <3

[Food] The 3 Most Popular Snacks in Sakura Hostel Asakusa [No.1 Hostel in TOKYO]

In case our guests are a bit hungry, we sell some snacks and pot noodles at the front desk of Sakura Hostel Asakusa.

snacks.JPG

Some guests buy it for their breakfast, or for their forth-meal, or for souvenirs.

Today I'll introduce the 3 most popular snacks.

1. Cookie & Cream Muffin (JPY 150)

cookie & cream muffin.JPG

Among 3 types of muffins we sell, this is the most popular with foreign guests thanks to its looking.
Most of guests become surprised with it and say "Woah! Oreo gets stuck in muffin!" :)

In addition, yesterday one Japanese woman came to Sakura Hostel Asakusa for taking a coffee break.
After the break, she got 7 Cookie & Cream muffins as souvenirs for her grandchildren!
She told me "This can be very popular with children too! Thank you :)" It's worth tasting it!

2. Yakisoba (Fried Noodle)  (JPY 200)

yakisoba instant.JPG

We sell 4 kinds of instant noodles : Kimchi (Korean pickle's flavor), Soba (buckweat noodle), Curry and Yakisoba.
Among those four, Yakisoba is the most popular.
Actually it is a bit complicated to cook. The video which shows how to cook it is HERE!
Since it's seen very often even in foreign countries, as I guess it, it's familiar with foreigners.

3. Chocolate Chunk Scone (JPY 200)

scone.JPG
There are 2 flavors of scones : Maple Walnut & Chocolate Chunk.
The more popular one is Chocolate Chunk. (My favorite one is also CC!)
European guests like to have it for breakfast. It is pair wonderfully with morning coffee or milk.
Chocolate in the morning wakes us up refreshingly!

You can buy and get these snacks at the front desk anytime you want!
Please feel free to ask the front staffs ;)

[TOKYO INFO] My Best TOKYO SKY TREE [No.1 Hostel in ASAKUSA]

Since I have started working in Sakura Hostel Asakusa,
I see TOKYO SKY TREE everyday when I come to work.

Currently TOKYO SKY TREE is very popular tourist spot in Asakusa area between Japanese and foreigners.
Unfortunately, all the staffs of Sakura Hostel Asakusa haven't yet visited there...
(Tomoyuki has been there, but gave up to climb up because he had to wait for more than 1 hour to buy the ticket :p)

Today I'd like to show you the best photos of TOKYO SKY TREE which I took so far!
I hope you'll enjoy them and get the urge to go there ;)

1. Shiny Sunrise through the gap in TOKYO SKY TREE

sky tree in the morning.JPG
I took this photo when I walked through Sensou-ji Temple in 6AM.
The shiny sunrise woke me up and made my day better than usual :)
Seeing TOKYO SKY TREE in the morning is a kind of my daily routine.

2. Bright Blue Sky Tree

sky tree.JPG
I took this picture at the Kototoi-bashi when we walked toward Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Stadium .
It was the day of Chanko Lunch & Sumo Tour.
Since the weather was very clear, it was quite nice to take a walk along Sumida river.
SKY TREE goes best with blue sky!

3. Sky Tree in a Dusk

sky tree ueno.JPGI took this photo in Ueno Park. You can see SKY TREE from Ueno area because it's very close to Asakusa area.
It's romantic view getting dark at the time :)
So that's nice if you bring your girlfriend to walk around the pond watching SKY TREE ! ehehe

Since SKY TREE is the latest tourist spot in Tokyo,
It's still very crowded and difficult to buy the tickets.
But all the people who have already climbed it up told me,

"It's very nice! It's worth climbing up!"

So I'm planning to climb it up at least in this year!

If you have ever been there, please tell us your impression :)

[Event] Takoyaki Friendship Party Report [Sakura Hostel Asakusa]

On last Saturday, we had the event "Takoyaki Friendship Party" at Sakura Hostel Asakusa.

8041920938_9846e2a647_b.jpg

Guests from SAKURA HOUSE, guests from our hostel and our staffs had fun making Takoyaki together!!

8041928940_5324d176fd_b.jpg
Yutaka was the Man of making Takoyaki! So professional :O
He told us,
" I usually make Takoyaki with my family. That's why I can do well! "

After Yutaka's lecture, our manager Tomo and the guest from Thailand tried to make good Takoyaki.

8041920277_4833c47c9e_b.jpg

B U T ...

CIMG2781.JPG
Oh, my god... we cannot call this "Takoyaki" :p
The funny thing was that was because the Takoyaki pan which they used was unplugged! XD

So, Tomo and our long-stay guest from Hong Kong tried again.
Naoto devoted his entire attention to watch them and wait for delicious Takoyaki... lol

8041921687_f597df5b81_b.jpg

8041930270_08faef15c2_b.jpg
Everybody was concentrated...

8041926696_03a8bbe067_b.jpg
Spanish girls from SAKURA HOUSE also tried to make Takoyaki!
For them it was first time to taste and cook it :)

Topping chopped seaweed, worcester-shire sauce and mayonnaise...

CIMG2787.JPG

Finally we finished making delicious & beautiful Takoyaki!
The guest looks so happy to see nice Takoyaki he made by himself :)))

8041909927_c992cd5e18_b.jpg

Tomoyuki and guest from Hong Kong enjoyed their conversation with good Takoyaki.

8041920380_3860b3749f_b.jpg

Send Your Smile to Your Friends From Sakura Hostel Asakusa

As the guest who has ever stayed with us already knows,
We take a photo of guests when they check out.

Today in the morning, I(Kyoko) took a photo of Mr. Matt from Australia when he checked out.

CIMG2769.JPG

And soon I showed him this picture, he loved it and said,

"I want to have postcards of this photo!!!"

Yes, we have the service you can make your original postcards!
He told me that he would send them to his friends in AUS.

CIMG2773.JPG

Of course you can make it with your own photos which you take during the trip in TOKYO.
In addition, only in 3 min from Sakura Hostel Asakusa there is the convenience store where you can buy stamps and post it.

To make it, it takes only 5-10 min and costs 150 YEN (1 Postcard).
So if you want, just ask the front desk ;)

Wanna try "unusual" Takoyaki with me?

As I wrote about our next event "Takoyaki Friendship Party" before,
We'll have the party on the day after tomorrow, 29th at Sakura Hostel Asakusa!

takoyaki.jpg

Having this kind of party, there are not only fun to enjoy eating Takoyaki with other guests, but fun to try "unusual" Takoyaki, in my opinion :)
Usually we put Tako(Sliced Octopus) inside as a filling, but I wanna try other ingredients as fillings of Takoyaki!

For example...

Cheese

cheese.jpg
Melting cheese inside of Takoyaki should be very tasty!

Kimuchi (Korean Pickles)

kimuchi.jpg
If you like a spicy and sour food, you'll like it :)

Chocolate

chocolate.jpg
Since I am a chocolate lover I believe that chocolate can be good with any foods! eheh

Do you have any idea? Or do you wanna try these ingredients with me?
If you wanna try to make "unusual" Takoyaki, (or USUAL Takoyaki, of course) please join us!!!

Cooking with French Girl -Tarte Flambee-

On the other day, I enjoyed cooking with our long-stay french girl, Delphine :)
We cooked the typical Alsatian pizza "Tarte Flambee" because she is from Alsace in France.

CIMG2641.JPG

She cooks her dinner and prepares the lunch box every nights at our guest kitchen.
She can speak very good Japanese! So she taught me how to cook in Japanese. How easy to understand...

CIMG2636.JPG

Originally Alsatian people put lard, but we made with becon for our health. lol
And since we couldn't find the french cheese "Fromage Blanc", we made the sauce with fresh cream & cream cheese.
It was quite easy to cook if you don't have a good oven. We made it in the normal toaster actually :)

CIMG2638.JPG

It was the 1st time to eat Tarte Flambee for me, but it was amazing! So delicious :)

CIMG2639.JPG

If you've never tried it and are lover of fatty food, I recommend you to try it once in your lives!

3 Tips for Making Good Relationship with the transportation in Tokyo

Even for Japanese people, the transportation in Tokyo is quite complicated.
Can you believe that there are more than 50 lines of train & subway in Tokyo?

train map in tokyo.jpg

You'll find 4 Asakusa Station of different lines in Asakura Area!!
That's toooooo difficult to find your direction without helping of Japanese people...

In addtion, working people is bothered with its crowded car interior during commute time.
Have you ever seen the scene of crowded train in Tokyo?
I know that it is very famous among foreigners as a crazy scene in Japan... lol

So, today I'd like to introduce 3 tips for making good relationship with the transportation in Tokyo!
They are particularly for foreign tourists in Tokyo.

1. Going to the place by Last Train & going back to the hostel by First Train

終電.jpg
Many of our guests go out for clubbing in Roppongi or Shibuya at Fridays' & Saturdays' night.
Then most of them ask us,

"When is the last train from there to Asakusa?"

Well, though there are so many bars and clubs which are open all night,
The last train & bus finish about at midnight!
It means, if you go to the club at 10:00PM, you can stay there only for 2 hours :O

So, I recommend you to go out by the last train and go back by the first train (about at 5:00AM).
Then you can enjoy clubbing enough :)

クラブ.jpg

2. Don't Use the transportation during the Commute Time!

満員電車.jpg

As I wrote at the introduction, one of funny things about the transportation in Tokyo is the crowded train.
Even though I'm from Tokyo and have grown up in Tokyo for 24 years, I cannot love this funny crush :p
Some of the tourists are curious to take a picture of it.

However, If you really don't want to be entangled with the crowded train,
I recommend you not to take the train during the commute time (7:00-9:00 AM and 18:00-21:00 PM).
Especially if you have a big backpack or suitecase or are with children,
It's better not to choose the crowded train :)

3. Utilizing Suica or PASMO card will help your trip easier

The thing which makes your trip more complicated is "figuring out how much is train fare".
There are 2 useful cards for train & subway!

suica card.jpgのサムネール画像     pasmo card.jpgのサムネール画像

The fare is depends on your distinations.
If you travel a long distance, normally you pay more expensive.
And when you transfer to another line, there is a possibility to you buy a new ticket.

You can find how much fare is on the map at each station, BUT!
If you don't wanna be bothered with thinking always about the price of fare,
These 2 cards work very well : )

If you have these cards money-charged, you can pass through ticket gate ONLY by touching.
You can buy them at almost every stations with 500 yen as a deposit.(It's refundable)
For charging, the machine leads you to charge easily in English.
(From 1,000 yen to 10,000yen, you can charge at once.)

With Suica & PASMO, you would travel around Tokyo very smartly!!!

If you stay in Sakura Hostel Asakusa,
Our friendly staffs will help you to find the route!
Please feel free to ask us : )

DO YOU KNOW WHAT CHANKONABE IS ?_?

Hello readers!
In 11 days, Grand Sumo Tournament of September 2012 will be held in Ryogoku.
The period is from 9th to 23rd of September.

sumo 2012 sep.JPG

We, Sakura Hostel Asakusa will have the Sumo Tour during the period. The detail of the event is here :)!!
Also we will have the Chanko Nabe Lunch with this event.
But, how many readers know what chanko nabe is?!

Chanko nabe is a Japanese stew (a type of nabemono/one-pot dish) normaly eaten by sumowrestlers as part of weight-gain diet.
The ingredients are usually chicken(quatered, skin left on), fish(fried & made into balls),
tofu (all of them include large quantity of protein sources), and various vegetables.
It is seasoned with dashi / chicken broth. But there are lots of flavour depends on the sumo academies.

I ate a bowl of chanko when I went to watch the sumo match in last May.

chankooo.JPG
At this time, Chanko was seasoned with chicken broth & citrus.
It was so yammy :) <3
I cannot wait to eat chankonabe in this event!!!

For whom is going on diet, eating chanko sounds a bit dangerous (because it's for weight-gain diet!).
But we would like you to try it once!

If you have any questions for our event, please feel free to ask us! [email protected]

[Event] Design Festa vol.36 is coming in November

Look!
Design Festa vol.36 is coming in November 10th & 11th :D!!

DF1 (1).JPG

Have you ever been to Design Festa which is held 2 times for a year at Tokyo Big Sight?!
The 2nd Design Festa of 2012 is coming soon in November.

I've visited the Design Festa vol.35 in May :) Though I went there by myself, it was quite enjoyable.
Many artists gather at Tokyo Big Sight for showing their works and they enjoy themselves by communication with other artists!
I loved this atmosphere <3

At this time, I'm giving most attention to this artist.

rimma.jpg

RImma makes the tablewares with the pattern & colors from Uzbekistan.
Since I've been in Uzbekistan for a month one year ago, I loved the uzbek colorful patterns.
Just by looking at these beautiful dishes, I remember my trip to Uzbekistan clearly :)

You can check the introduction of Rimma and other artists here

The pamphlets are placed at Sakura Hotel & Hostel.

So you can take it away for free and check how Design Festa is gonna be at this time!

Yesterday our guests from various countries were cooking Curry & Rice at the kitchen.

kitchen2 (1).JPG
They aren't travelling together, just made friends at Sakura Hostel Asakusa.
I think cooking something together is the better way to make friends :)

kitchen1.JPG
And actually his curry with mashroom & chicken is quite delicious!! Great cook :)

At the kitchen there are almost all necessary thing to cook prepared.
(Pans, IH Heater, Knives(rent at the front desk), condiments, dishes, toaster, microwave, rice cookers etc)
You can keep your foods & drinks in the common fridge. For cooking lovers, it's perfect ;)

So, even if you come to Tokyo by yourselves, you will NOT feel alone in Sakura Hostel Asakusa :)

New Spot to visit! TOKYO GATE BRIDGE

Did you already hear about the new spot in Tokyo?
Yesterday my friends and I went to the Wakasu Camping Park in Koto-ku for BBQ!

wakasu2.JPG

Near this park, there is the new spot of Tokyo.
That is...

tgb2.JPG

TOKYO GATE BRIDGE

This bridge which connects Wakasu ward to Central Breakwater had been constructed for reducing the clog by containerized transportation since 2004. It has about 2,600m of length!
Since this rare shape looks like a dinosaur, the bridge is sometimes called "Dino Bridge".
It looked huge, I think!

At the night time, the bridge will be lighten-up. Oh, I missed to see that!

tgb3.JPG
It's the sunset time~

The park near TOKYO GATE BRIDGE is very calm and nice place to spend times.
We enjoyed delicious BBQ there :)

wakasu1.JPG

From Asakusa to Shinkiba where is the closest station to the park, it takes only 30 min by metro with less than 300 yen(one way).
The area is very popular for foreigners too. Odaiba, Maihama, Tokyo Big Sight.. they are very close each other.

TOKYO GATE BRIDGE and Wakasu Camping Park could be recommended as the places to visit in Tokyo! Don't miss it ;)

Summer Holidays in KYOTO Part III

Hello readers :)! I'm Kyoko.
Today I would like to introduce the last recommendable spot in Kyoto where I visited last week.

The last place is VERY VERY popular and famous amog foreign tourists.
And also here is the place where Japanese people want to visit once in their lives.

IMG_9756.JPG
Fushimi Inari Shrine

This shrine is famous for thousands red gates which leads to the top of mountain.

IMG_9757.JPG
Its mysterious atmosphere attaracts us very deeply.
It was the second time to visit there for me, but the last time was in winter.
So it's a bit different in summer.

IMG_9774.JPG

Since this shrine worships fox as a god, there are wooden plaques to write our wishes shaped like a fox.
They are so cute :)

IMG_9768.JPG

Finally on the way to the bus stop Inari Taisha Mae, I found the icecream shop.
It was quite hot day, so I didn't hesitate to buy it at all. hehehe
But, the ice cream I bought is very very funny!! LOOK!!!!!

IMG_9777.JPG

WOW!!It doesn't fall down if I turn it upside down!!!
That's a entertaining icecream :D hehehe

Anyway, Fushimi Inari Shrine is located only in 10 min from Kyoto Station by bus.
So please visit there once in your life!

Summer Holidays in KYOTO Part II

Hello readers ^o^ I'm Kyoko.
Since Sakura Hostel Asakusa's staffs love travelling, we sometimes write about our trips here.
As I wrote at yesterday's blog, I spent some days in Kyoto last week.

Today's recommendable place to visit in Kyoto is...

IMG_9709.JPG

Nishi-Hongan-ji Temple

It was the second time I visited there!
Nishi-Hongan-ji Temple is the head temple of the religious school of Buddhism which my family belongs to.
(In fact I'm not good at talking about Buddhism... LOL)

IMG_9712.JPG

There are very calm atmosphere and beautiful wooden arquitecture.
Also I found the very beautiful golden decoration at the gate.

IMG_9711.JPG

Even though it was very very hot in Kyoto on that day,
We felt a bit cooler inside of this temple.

IMG_9716.JPG

If you love the calm atmosphere,
If you are very tired of sightseeing,
Nishi-Hongan-ji Temple is the best place to take a rest :)

Summer Holidays in KYOTO Part I

Generally speaking, Summer in Kyoto is very very hot.
But, I went to spend some days there with my family to see my sister and her husband.
She has lived there for 4 months since she got married.
So I'd like to introduce some places recommendable where I visited in the serial form from today.

Today's recommendable spot is.....

IMG_9652.JPG
Kyoto Tower

Though I've ever visited to Kyoto 4 times before, I had never climbed it up :O
Kyoto Tower is located exactlly in front of Kyoto St. You can find it easily.

I and my family went there when sun was getting set in the mountain.
Maybe it was around 18:30.

IMG_9654-1.JPG
It was totally impressing! We loved it :)
We saw so many couples. Yes, it was very very romantic too at the same time.

IMG_9664-1.JPG
With only 770 YEN for the entrance fee, we could enjoy the panoramic view in Kyoto.
It was much better than our expection!

[Hostel] Cooking with Swiss Guest -Rueblitorte (Carrot Cake)- [Guest]

On last Friday, I(Kyoko) and our guest from Switzland, Pascal cooked the special Swiss cake.

IMGP9817.JPG

That is called "Rueblitorte" in Swiss German.
"Ruebli" means carrot and "torte" means cake. Yes, simply this is the cake of carrot.

We used a whole carrot grated for baking 4 small cups of cake!
If you dislike vegetables, it sounds, hummmm, not so good.
But! You'll NOT feel so much taste of carrot with this cake.

This is like a MAGIC!!! :D

CIMG2272.JPG

Pascal usually bakes it for the dessert after dinner. This is his favorite cake!
It was very easy to bake it. You can try it!
And we may add this to the menu of Sakura Cafe. So you will have a chance to taste it at Sakura Cafe too in the future!

Thank you very much Pascal :) Merci, vielmal!!

[Staff] My trip to Busan in South Korea [Sakura Hostel Asakusa]

Hello!
I came back yesterday from my trip to Busan in South Korea. Today I'll write about my trip.

Have you ever been to Busan?
For me it was the 2nd time to visit South Korea, but to Busan it was the 1st time.
Since it's quite easy and close to visit there from Japan, the trip to South Korea is very popular amog Japanese.

In Busan I visited the beautiful beaches and spent most of the time there.

IMG_9505.JPG

The 1st beach is Heaunde Beach.

heaunde.JPG

IMG_9507.JPG

IMG_9506.JPG

Here is very popular among tourists and also local people.
To swim and enjoy water, here is very good place! I became well-sunburned XD

The 2nd beach is Gwangalli Beach.

IMG_9603.JPG

I went there at night time to see the beautiful view with the lighten-up bridge.
Along the beach there are lots of bars and restaurants.

gwangalli.JPG

IMG_9609.JPG

In addition to the beaches, I visited the Busan Museum of Art.
The Grand Exhibition of Art took place there.

IMG_9534.JPG

You can enjoy the modern art and the classic calligraphy.

IMG_9569.JPG

IMG_9593.JPG

IMG_9585.JPG

And about the food, I enjoyed Korean BBQ at the restaurant near the guesthouse I stayed.

IMG_9518.JPG
IMG_9517.JPG

It was very nice and quite reasonable!

I really loved staying in Busan more than in Seoul because there are few japanese and beautiful nature :)
Actually even you can go by ship from Fukuoka for only 3 hours.
I recommend you to visit there once in your life!

The Top of FAQ : How can I get to Narita Airport?

We, Sakura Hostel Asakusa's staffs, are always asked by the guests,

"How can I get to Narita Airport?"

front.jpg

From Asakusa, the best way to Narita is by Narita Sky Access. (Toei Asakusa line)
It goes to the airport directlyt by 75 min with 1,240 yen.

asakusasen.jpgのサムネール画像

But on 3rd of July, the new transportation to the airport was born in Tokyo!

Tokyo Shuttle
(Keisei Bus Company)

tokyo shuttle.jpg

Tokyo Shuttle goes to Narita AP from Tokyo Station.
Normally it costs 1,000 yen (one way, if you reserve a seat a week before).

But there is the debut campaign!
By the beginning of September, you can take it with only 800 yen!!

If you are JR Pass Holders, the total cost you'll pay is going to be 1,000 yen.
( from Asakusa using Tsukuba Express & JR Yamanote line to Tokyo Station)

This is awsome news for backpackers or all those who want to get a good deal on the transportation in Tokyo.

Good Access from Narita Airport :)

Hello everyone~~~^^
Today it's hot day here in Tokyo. The temperature reads about 30 degrees :O
Summer is coming soon!

By the way, today I had a conversation with our guest from Washington, USA.

james.JPG

His name is James.

We talked up a storm about scuba diving.
Have you ever tried scuba diving?

sd.jpg

I had taken my license 3 years before,
then I have been Okinawa Pref. to scuba twice.

Okinawa is the one of the famous diving spots in Japan.
Many divers enjoy the activities there.

Here is my latest scubing in Okinawa in 2011.

nimo.jpg

nimo 3.jpg

nimo 2.jpg

sd 2.jpg

I met with lots of cute & interesting fishes and beautiful coral reef.

And James recommended me "Byron Bay" near Brisbane in Australia.
There is the most beautiful diving spot where he visited, he said.
I should visit and meet with the beautiful coral reefs at Byron Bay once in my life!!

All those who are interested in scuba diving,
please come and have a conversation with ME in Sakura Hostel Asakusa!

The Sumo Tour on May 2012

Have you ever watched the sumo match live?

CIMG1672.JPG

On May 9th, we provided the sumo tour for our hostel's guests and Sakura House residents.
It was the first time to watch the match not only for them but for me!

We went to the Sumo Studiam in Ryogoku from Sakura Hostel Asakusa. (30-40 min by walk)
On the way we saw the Sky Tree at the Azuma bridge!

sumo1.JPG

As soon as we entered the gate, there is the big picture of sumo wrestlers.

sumo tour 2012

Before entering to the studiam, we went to eat "Chanko".
Chanko is the food which the wrestlers eat everyday and also is made by them!

CIMG1648.JPG

The flavor of the day was "citrus and salt" :)

sumo2.JPG

So delicious!

Then one of our members asked me,

"Sumo wrestlers eat this everyday... but is this enough for them? So small!"

That's true, but I think they eat this with the 3-times-sized bowl :O lol

After that we entered to the studiam and started watching.

CIMG1650.JPG

Since I like sumo and know some wrestlers,
it was so exciting!!!

CIMG1665.JPG

In addition, what was very surprising that there were lots of wrestlers from foreign countries!
For example, Mongolia, Russia, Bulgaria, Brazil, Estonia...

Even the current champion wrestler is from Mongolia!!!

CIMG1667.JPG
His name is "Hakuhou".

My favorite wrestler Koto-Oh-Shu (from Bulgaria, the wrestler red-circled) won!!! Wooohooo

CIMG1664.JPG

The next sumo period in Tokyo will be in September.
I cannot wait to watch it again!!

The Beautiful Violet Curtain

Hello everyone!
I, Kyoko came back to Asakusa from the training in Jimbocho for 3 weeks :)
It was very nice experience to work there.
My working diary in Jimbocho is HERE!(in Japanese)

By the way, today I'd like to talk about this one!

Japanese wisteria / TANAKA Juuyoh

This is the garden of Japanese Wisteria.
Very beautiful, isn't it?

Japanese wisteria / TANAKA Juuyoh

Japanese Wisteria is called "Fuji"(藤) in Japanese,
but it's written in the different kanji as Mt.Fuji(富士山).

From the end of April to the beginning of May,
We can enjoy very beautifully bloomed Fuji in Japan.

Japanese wisteria / TANAKA Juuyoh

Since there are four distinct seasons in Japan,
You can enjoy the seasonal flowers and the varied nature.

Why don't you come to Japan for enjoying this attraction? ;)

The Difference of Interests Between Japanese & Foreigners

Hello again! I, Kyoko am going to write today too :)

One day, when I came to work to Asakusa,
I figured out a very interesting fact.

That is the difference of interests between Japanese people & foreigners.

Usually japanese love taking pictures of scenery or buildings.
Like my pics.

414-1.JPG

414-2.JPG

However, I saw lots of foreigners taking pictures of the statues of Buddha!

414-3.JPG

414-4.JPG

In my opinion, most of japanese (of course including me) like enjoying the atmosphere and foods in the touristic place.

On the other hand, it seems even in the same place foreign people like enjoying the culture and experience.

So what today I would like to ask our readers is
When you visit to foreign place, what do you enjoy there?

Maple Syrup Candy :D

In fact, I love maple syrup!!
So I really liked this mini present.

At Sakura Hostel Asakusa,
You can enjoy maple syrup with toast at the breakfast (315yen).

I guess the reason why in last month we had accepted lots of Canadian guests is THESE MAPLE SYRUPS!

Wake-Up Time!

Today in the morning, I became curious,

"What time does people get up in the morning?"

a900_rising_sun_and_working / orange_kuma

Sakura Hostel Asakusa's staff take turns attending at reception in shifts.
So we sometimes should get up very early in the morning.
For example, I got up at 3:50 today :O

In Japan, on weekdays,
working people & students usually wake up around at 5:30-6:00.
Japanese commuter rush is really famous, as most of you know.

Rush Hour Subway Train, Somewhere In Tokyo / Stephen Kelly Photography

However, Portuguese people usually wake up around at 8:00.
They are barely in hurry comparing with Japanese.

On the other hand, my younger sister who is studying in high school in USA,
told me that she & her host family usually get up around at 6:00 to go to school until at 7:30!
I heard that schools start early in the morning in USA.

I found that wake-up time depends on countries & cultures!
So let me know,

What time do you get up in the morning on weekdays?

You can be owner of Sakura Tree!

I found the interesting project about Sakura (Cherry Blossom)!

Nagatoro planting "My Sakura" project

Nagatoro city is located in Saitama prefecture.

And it's famous for beautiful sakura's sight.

Cherry blossoms / Sakura / 桜 / TANAKA Juuyoh (田中十洋)

This long-termed project is to make the beautiful secondary forest coverd with Sakura.
If you join this, you can be the owner of one of Sakura trees. (However, in fact, the specialist will care of your tree.)

Your name is on the plate like that! And you'll get the certification.

sakura plate1.gif

(This image is from http://www.nagatoro.gr.jp/sakura_p/ )

It costs 10,000 yen to get your Sakura :)
If you're interested in this project, more detail is HERE (in Japanese).

How would you like to have your Sakura in Japan and visit Nagatoro ? ;)
It should be very precious experience!

What do you usually have for a Breakfast?

The cuisine can present the culture.
Especially Breakfasts are really different among cultures.

I think some western people might be surprised,
but we, Japanese people eat boiled rice for a breakfast.

This is the typical japanese breakfast!

Japanese style breakfast / holycalamity

-Boiled Rice
-Miso soup
-Baked fish
-Tofu(fermented bean curd)
-Hot tea

When I go abroad, I always miss this combination!

Through my travelling around the world,
I met different breakfasts.

In Portugal (my second motherland!),
Many people go to cafe or pastry in the morning.
And they have expresso and sweet cakes.

BF2.jpgのサムネール画像

In Uzbekistan, in Saturday's morning,
Men come together at restaurant and eat pilaf.

BF4.jpg

This pilaf is very typical uzbek dish.
And it's very tasty but a bit heavy for BF...

So I'm really interested in what you eat for BF!
What do you usually have for BF in your countries??

Japanese National Food

Have you ever tasted the Curry & Rice in Japan?

CURRY1.jpg

Since I (Kyoko) am Curry Lover, today I'd like to introduce our national food : Japanese Curry & Rice.

We usually make curry at home.

CURRY2.JPG

The roux is composed of these ingredients :

-Butter -Wheat Flour -Curry Powder -Sauce -Ketchup -Soy Sauce -Consomme -Milk -Salt & Pepper -Sugar

Not so spicy as an Indian and Thailand Curries :) It tastes very rich!

The fillings are normaly

CURRY3.jpg

-Onion -Carrots -Potatoes -Meat (Pork, Beef, Chicken etc)

But it reallly depends on families. And we eat japanese red pickles called "Fukujin-Zuke" on the side.

CURRY4.jpg

In addition we have some variations.

For example,

With pork cutlet

CURRY5.jpg

With seafood

CURRY6.jpg

Look so delicious, dont' you think so?! ;)

If you stay in Sakura Hostel Asakusa, We have Beef Curry & Rice at our cafe's menu! (500 yen)
