Moin moin and good morning everyone!
Today I want to tell you of a tour I took last week. That tour brought me to Tokyo's so called Shitamachi (下町 literally lower city) which is the local old town located near Nippori station. The area is also called Yanesen. It's made up of the areas of Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi. In Yanesen you will be able to see lots of old houses and architecture.
The first place we visited was a local cemetery. It has some very old and also interesting new style gravestones. Also there is a long street in the center of the cemetery which is surrounded by cherry trees. Lots of people come here during the blooming season.
After walking through small streets with many small shrines and temple buildings we arrived at the Nezu Shrine (根津神社). It is famous for its imitation of the red Torii paths of the famous hill in southern Kyoto. Even though they are not that long ;)
Here are pictures of the entry gate and the Torii. There are ponds with Koi and there even was a crane, but I didn't manage to get a good shot of it.
At the end of our tour we followed a long, winding road which was filled with souvenir shops and many, many little restaurants or take out shops. They had very delicious looking food!
So if you are interested in old architecture or just want to enjoy a quiet day away of all of Tokyo's hectic atmosphere you should head out to Yanesen and go for a walk or do some shopping!
See you soon!
