Hi all! This is Ayu from Sakura Hostel Asakusa.
Yesterday, we had Japanese Calligraphy Workshop!
Japanese Calligraphy is called ''SHODO'' (書道) in Japanese.
Even if you haven't heard about the name, you may heard of ''JUDO'' (柔道) or ''KENDO'' (剣道).
Do you know what does "DO" (道) mean?
It means ''way of life'' or ''philosophy''.
So, trying SHODO is a good chance to concentrate and train your mind!
Let me show you how the event was yesterday.
In our workshop, you can try wrting your name in kanji (Chinese character).
Before writing, you'll discuss with teacher which will be better character for your name.
They'll put those with good meaning, and same sound as your name.
First, the teacher will show you how to write.
Then, it's your turn!
Look, he's very concentrated!
And it's done! Great job!!
We usually write in kanji, but you can also try Hiragana, Japanese alphabets.
As hiragana consist of less storkes than kanji, it may looks easier to you.
However, it is more difficult to copy the shape in good balance when it has less strokes.
Wow, she's done very good!
In Japan, it is popular to write our new year resolution in the beginning of the year.
It's called ''KAKI-ZOME'' (書き初め) and we're now planning KAKI-ZOME event with our guests.
We'll annouce as soon as we decide the details.
See you around^^
