Hi there! This is Ayu from Sakura Hostel Asakusa.
This is Part 3 of my blog about trip in Sendai.
In Part 2, I was visiting Sendai Castle Ruins and Sendai City Museum.
After that, I unexpectedly found a interesting spot closeby.
Can you guess what is special about this pond?
First hint is the STATUE in this photo.
Do you need more hints?
OK, the photo below is the 2nd hint. It looks an old photo, doesn't it?
It says this photo was taken around 1924. More than 90 years ago!
All right, here's the ANSWER!
So the birthplace of figure skating in Japan is in Sendai city!
Now figure skating is very popular in Japan and we have a lot of good skaters.
You might know Yuzuru Hanyu, who is the gold medalist in Sochi Olympic Games (2014).
His hometown is this SENDAI city!!
What a coincidence, he won the gold medal after about 100 years since figure skating came to his hometown!
Ice skating might not be very popular in your country, but you can try it in Japan.
In Tokyo, there are several skate links and one is open all year.
It is Meiji Jingu Gaien Ice Skating Park near Harajuku or Shibuya.
They also have some lessons for kids, so you may see a future medalist in the link!
