Hi there! This is Ayu from Sakura Hostel Asakusa.
Do you know Japanese musical instrument ''Shamisen''?
It looks like a kind of guitar, or some call it Japanese banjo.
Today, we had a special mini live of Shamisen.
Played by Travis, our guest from Canada!
He plays it for a few years and has played in the world shamisen competitions!
Through his Japan tour this time, he played in many different part of Japan.
It was really an honor to welcome him and to have chance to enjoy his performance in our hostel!
Most of the audience were not familiar to this instrument, so he first explained the background and structure of shamisen.
Playing shamisen is more popular in Tohoku area, north part of Japan. His shamisen is also made in north, Hokkaido.
When I visited Hirosaki city in Aomori prefecture last summer, I had chance to enjoy the live performance by local players.
During his trip this time, he also played in the competition held in Hirosaki! What a coincidence!
He played a few traditional shamisen songs and also some modern songs such as the famous part of ''Smoke on the water'' by Deep Purple or the main theme of the Ghibli movie ''Spirited Away''.
It was all amazing!
Some guests, especially those who has experience of playing guitar, got interested in the difference between guitar and shamisen, and asked him about how to play or difference in its chord.
So, for our curiosity, he also gave us a chance to try it!
Thank you so much, Travis!!
If you play any instruments and planning to visit Tokyo, stay with us and show us your performance♪
