What is the best restaurant for Lunch in Asakusa?: Staff's recommendation Part 2

土古里 浅草店-recommend by Jack
Korean restaurant for spicy-food lovers
togori.gifとごり.jpg
Togori
I recommend lunch menu for budget traveller.
Around 1000yen for lunch.
トゴリ2.jpg
Korean food is normally spicy because koreans love to feel hot teast with a lot of sweat in summer.
You can try some real korean food if you ask them.
Usually, they serve mild korean food because it is too hot for Japanese.

Tokyo Sky Tree

Naoto was excited one night when he arrived at the hostel for his night shift.

"It's tall! Did you see it?? It's tall!", he says.

He went to see"Tokyo Sky Tree" under construction.

We will have this "second Tokyo Tower" pretty close to our hostel in the year 2011.

img_about_towerill.jpg

They started building it a year ago.
It's now taller than 100 m. (Will be taller than 600 m when it's completed.)

I'm looking forward to seeing the beautiful tower behind Sumida River in two years.
Will we be able to see it from our hostel? What do you think, Naoto?

New Paradice.

Till lately, one of my dream was to get marry the CEO of Haagen Dazs.
When I was tennnager, my breakfast was always ice-cream (Rum raisin!) and
there were many stocks in the fridge.

Now, I'm working and I rediscover that I'm adult everytime I buy Haagen Dazs
because it's a bit expensive for a student.

On 17th of July, they opened a new shop in Ginza.

La Maison Ginza
I haven't tried there yet but I checked their website and found that it's a paradice for me♪
I should go the next payday!

I don't think I can get marry him any more but I just wanna say
thank you for this great job to him;)

Lunch at universities.

Do you think it's expensive to eat in Japan?
Compared with the other countries, though the size is small,
the price is the same or more expensive.

Then, I reccomend you to go to universities for your lunch.
I don't know much about universities in your country,
our universities have nice cafeterias on campus.

As Japanese students eat a lot but are saving their money (in general),
everything is easy-on-the-pockets;)

Grand Sumo Tounament

May Grand Sumo Tounament will start on this Sunday.
It will be at Ryogoku Sumo Stadium in Tokyo. It takes only 15 min. by train from our hostel, or you can even walk.

sumo.jpg

Have you seen sumo before?
I haven't. Well I want to.

There are many kinds of tickets still available.
Unfortunately, you cannot buy tickets if you are overseas.
But you still have chances to buy one after you arrived in Japan.
See here for more details or ask us at the reception when you arrive at the hostel.

Don't smoke on the street

In most areas of Tokyo, you are not allowed to smoke on the street.

no smoking.jpg
If you ignore this kind of signs on the street and still smoke, you might get fined 1,000 to 20,000 yen, depending on the administering ward.

On the other hand, there is no punishment for drinking alcohol on the street.
You don't have to hide your bottles in a bag here. Different countries have different rules.

Tuna, tuna.

tunamaguro.jpg
As we've informed, tourists were not allowed to watch the morning tuna auctions
to ensure a smooth and accident free course of business
during the busiest time of the year at Tsukiji Fish Market,

Finaly, they started tuna auction to be open to public from 19th.
Please be aware of these following things before watching the auctions.
?You can't take photos using strobe light.
?You can't touch tunas.
?Follow guards' directions there.
If you have a consciousness of being representative of your country, it's easy:)

Please enjoy our kitchen of Tokyo♪

busy season.

maguro.jpg
In December, Japanese are always busy and in a hurry(I'm not, though).
From 15th of Dec. to 17th of Jan, the government of Tokyo Metropolitan
decided not to open the auction to the public.
I guess it's because most of fishermans are rough-natured persons and it's dangerous:P

So, if you have a plan to go there in that period, you don't have to get up so early.
Of course, the other shops and restaurants are open for us.
The best time to go there will be around 8AM and have some fresh sushi for your breakfast;)

Things to know before you go to Tsukiji Fish Market

Tsukiji Fish Market is one of the most popular tourist atractions in Tokyo at the moment.

tsukiji.jpg

Every morning, we see many of our guests wake up before 6:00AM and go to the fish market to see the Tuna auctions. The auctions are really exciting to see, we believe.
But please remember that there are some rules and etiquettes you must observe.

No flash.
No touching fish.
No talking/shouting loud.
No entering/walking in prohibited areas.
Such and such....

Let's be careful about the etiquette to keep a good relationship with people working at the market.

To Narita International Airport

You may think it's difficult to buy a ticket from the machine at stations.
Even Japanese sometimes make a mistake:(

In the morning, we are often asked how to buy a ticket to the Narita Airport.
But please don't worry:)
Direction is available next to each machine at Asakusa station like this↓↓
naritaticket1

It's only three steps!
Touch "English"→Touch "Keisei Line"→"Touch 1060 "
naritaticket2
Then, you can go to the airport without being afraid of closing the gate♪
Easy;)

21st Tokyo International Film Festival

filmfestival.jpg
From 18th to 26th, we have Tokyo International Film Festival at Roppongi Hills
and Shibuya Bunkamura theatre.
This year, “Ecology = Preservation of Earth’s Environment” is the main topic
and they had a Green carpet which is made of recycled plastic bottles instead of a red one.

Many films are available for this nine nights and tickets are still available for some films.
You may see some actors and actresses;)?

The art gallerly

Many people go to Harajuku to see cosplay people every weekends.
If you want take a picture with them, you can just ask them(in English should be ok).
They would be happy to be asked;)

Also, if you are interested in the arts, I recommend you to go to a cool gallery near by.
It's called Design Festa Gallery and looks like this↓↓
west03.jpg

I went there a few days ago and it was very interesting.
There are two different buildings and I prefer the East one.
You can also have a space for your works☆

After taking a look around the galleries, you might be hungry.
Then, just go and have some Japanese pancakes on the first floor of the West of them.
You can find a nice restaurant and appease your appetite.

Hmmm, it sounds a perfect plan for your Sunday in Tokyo:P

Wa?spirit of harmony?

I was learning tea ceremony for three years in high school and I really love it.
Unfortunately, not all Japanese can do it but you can have an experience if you'd like to.

chashitsu.jpg
I like the smell of Japanese tatami mat rooms:)

At Hotel Okura, it has a room for the tea ceremony and you can have an experience there.
You don't have to be a guest there (at least 36.000 yen/night!).
We can make a reservation for you and you just need to pay 1,050 yen/person there.
(only weekdays)

It's still in Tokyo, but is surrounded by greenery.

become more complex or convenient?

fukutoshin.bmp
A new metro line, Fuku-Toshin line, is officially opened yesterday.
It connects Shibuya and Wako City through Ikebukuro and has 16 stations.

Tokyo is getting smaller and many choices to get to one place.
It will ease our terrible congestion every morning:)
How should I go to Ikebukuro now...by JR or by this new line?

Anyway, I gotta try this!

The dawn of US-Japan relations

perry2.jpg
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the U.S.
Treaty of Amity and Commerce, this exhibition aims to achieve further mutual
understanding between the U.S. and Japan by reviewing their diplomatic
relations during the late Edo period through sources provided from both

As you know, our national sport is Sumo...though two Yokoduna(the highest ranked in sumo)
are from Mongolia.
We have grand sumo tournament in Tokyo right now and the next Sunday is the final day.
It is difficult to get a ticket for that but on weekdays,
you still have a chance if you go to the stadium(called Kokugikan) in the morning.
The cheapest one is 2,100yen for an adult.

Also, on the 1st of June, we have Grand Sumo Championship 2008 at the same stadium.
This is not a tournament but a special championship that

Ice Cream city in Tokyo.

icecreamcity.jpg
Have you ever heard about "ice-cream city" ?
As one of our guest, Pierre, commented here, it does exist in Ikebukuro
and it looks really attractive place☆
According to their website, there are seven icecream shops and always have some events.
For example, they have a Mega Parfait Festa right now.
Also, many weird flavors such as eggplant, curry, Tofu and so on...are available.
Which one do you want to try?

There are "Dumpling Stadium" and "Republic of Dessert" inside the same building.
Once you enter there, you'll be so stuffed;)
If you get bored with sweets, you can just go and get some dumplings
and then, return to icecream♪

From Asakusa, take Tsukuba Express to Akihabara.
Akihabara to Ikebukuro, take JR Yamanote line and you'll get there in 30mins.
