Ice fishing at Matsubara lakeside in Nagano! Really coooool! :D

Hello together,

a few days ago, it was the first time in my life, I was
ice fishing!
^^

In Japan, ice fishing has a long tradition and of course, I didn't want to miss this kind of fun! ^^

So Hiro-san, Naoto-san and former employee Ryoko-san from our Hostel in Asakusa, Linn-san and Hitoshi-san from Sakura Hotel Jimbocho, my boyfriend Marius and me get our stuff packed and drive together to Nagano prefecture, where a nice and big, icy lake called lake Matsubara was waiting for our fishing skills! :D

We started our big fishing adventure at midnight and with some breaks, we had all our fishing material lent together at the lakeside very early in the morning (I think, it was around 6:30 am). ^^

IMG_4686.JPG

IMG_4689.JPG

IMG_4681.JPG

IMG_4697.JPG

Wow, it was soooo cold, you can't imagine!
It should be around -6 degrees, but feels like -20. ^^

Fortunately, we all were wearing thick and warm clothes (I really recommend skying clothes for this kind of winter adventure) and rubber boots could be lent there (or just wearing snowboard boots, like Naoto-san did). ^^

IMG_4725.JPG

IMG_4724.JPG

And I had Kairo (small heating pillows) for my feet and hands! They are really cheap and you can get them almost in every supermarket and conbini in the winter. ^^ Really recommend that! ^^

kairooo.jpg

As Hiro-san was the only one who went to ice fishing before a few years ago, he was a great teacher and perfectly knows, what we have to do! ^^

So first, you have to get the hole in the ice...with this useful tool, it isn't a problem (for man with power ^^).

IMG_4691.JPG

IMG_4692.JPG

IMG_4694.JPG

Then just put the ice out of the whole with such a cute sieve! ^^

IMG_4695.JPG

IMG_4698.JPG

Next get your place clear. Get you a nice small chair (you can lent them there or bring one with you - thank you, Hiro-san!) and build up your tent. You can rent a tent for one or two persons or bring your own.

IMG_4702.JPG

IMG_4703.JPG

These tents are really great. ^^

IMG_0979.JPG

Especially, when it starts snowing like that! :D

IMG_4732.JPG

IMG_4739.JPG

We had a really great fishing base camp! ^^

IMG_4730.JPG

IMG_4736.JPG

Tadaaa, this were the bait. Looking yummy, right :D

IMG_4744.JPG

So "just" put the bait on the hooks.
It takes some time for me, because first, I put my finger in the hook, then one of my gloves, too. ^^

IMG_4707.JPG

IMG_4746.JPG

So: is the hole in the ice, the worms on the right place (not on the ground or sticking on my gloves :D), you put your fishing line in the water. On the end of the line, there's a little weight, so that you will feel and see it on the line, when you've reached the ground.

So we started to get our many many fish together! :D

IMG_0978.JPG

IMG_0981.JPG

IMG_4708.JPG

IMG_4726.JPG

Look at this cute fishing rod...it's very small and thin, hihi. But as the fish, we want to fish, are very small, too, that's totally fitting! ^^ They are called wakasagi (Hypomesus nipponensis). ^^ The fishing rod had 5 hooks, so that you could get the fish easily.

IMG_4741.JPG

The wakasagi are swimming around 10 cm over the lake ground.

So you just have to move your fishing rod a few times a little bit up and down and wait around 5 seconds.
Normally, a fish will bite your worm, you'll feel this little movement and get your rod out of the water with yummy fish.

NORMALLY :D

Here you can see some of the good work! :D

IMG_4718.JPG

The fishing record of the day before we went fishing was around 140 wakasagi, one person has catched! ^^

Our record (7 persons) was
....13 fish...
together.

Marius and me have catched....NOTHING. ^^

IMG_4743.JPG

IMG_4745.JPG

I don't know why! ^^
Maybe the person the day before catched to much fish! ^^

But everyone was proud of the catch and in the restaurant near the lake (where you can borrow all the nice fishing materials) we get nice Tempura from our wakasagi.

IMG_4714.JPG

IMG_4756.JPG

You eat them with salt. It was so yummy! ^^

IMG_4754.JPG

IMG_4755.JPG

But it wasn't enough unfortunately. ^^ So I eat some Butadon. Love it! Udon was sold well there, too...but unfortunately I was so busy with eating, that I forgot to take pictures! :D

IMG_4757.JPG

After we were finished with fishing, we drive to a nearby onsen.

The others told me, that it was really nice there...I couldn't go in...had a little tattoo problem unfortunately. ^^

Not so bad, I could sleep a little bit and watching then Marius, who went in an Onsen for the first time, coming out with a red head. Was hot, I guess :D

But the Onsen was really nice with an outside pool, too. The temperatures were around 40 degrees. ^^ Here's a picture from inside the onsen. ^^

IMG_0985.JPG

Then, we were driving back to lovely Tokyo, where no single snowflake is hiding!
Wow, I was sleeping like a stone in the car. ^^

IMG_4770.JPG

IMG_4772.JPG

It was a great day and I'll never forget this experience of going ice fishing.
That was really wow! ^^
I think, that was an unique experience for me and I'm so happy, that my lovely colleagues take me with them! ^^
Thanks, you're great! :)

If you have the chance, cause staying in wintertime here in Japan, I recommend to go ice fishing. ^^
That would be a great experience you'll never forget! :)

(And if you don't have the space for skying clothes in your luggage, don't worry...it may look funny, like mine..really 80s :D ... but you can get such warm clothes really - and I mean REALLY - cheap second hand, like I did. There's a great store between Ueno and Akihabara not far away from our Hostel. ^^)

Have much fun! ^^

Eating sushi for good luck - Ehomaki (恵方巻)! ^^

Hello together,

yesterday I wrote about Setsubun, the bean-throwing Festival or bean-throwing Ceremony, which will take place on February 3rd.

But to throw beans around is not the only way, to catch a good fortune for the future for oneself.

There's another tradition for that day.
It's to eat
EHOMAKI
^^
378247721_e3df39bc65.jpg

So what is ehomaki?

Ehomaki are "lucky direction rolls" and thicker than normal sushi rolls.
You eat them on the night of Setsubun.

Here you can have a little idea, of how big and ehomaki is...really big! ^^
eho01.jpg

As you might guess, there are some special rules for making and eating ehomaki to really have a good fortune:

First it must contain seven ingredients: so to be related with the Seven Deities of Good Fortune called Shichifukujin, seven fillings are traditionally rolled in. For example, simmered shiitake mushrooms and kanpyo (dried gourd), cucumber, rolled omelet (tamagoyaki), eels, sakura denbu (sweet fish powder), and seasoned koyadofu (freeze-dried tofu) are used. These ingredients represent good health, happiness, and prosperity, and rolling the fillings means good fortune.

eho big.jpg

It must not be cut, because it might cut (off) your luck.

You have to eat it while facing the lucky direction (the eho), which changes every year - because the lucky direction depends on the zodiac symbol for the year.

setsubun_compass.jpg

Finally, you must eat the whole roll in total silence. So eat it quietly and don't stop while eating, wish for what you want in the coming year.

ehou02.png

For 2012 the lucky direction is North-North-West. So best to take a compass before eating. ^^

So what's the history behind the ehomaki?

Legend says when Toyotomi Hideyoshi was fighting for the rulership of Japan, one of his samurai, Horio Yoshiharu 堀尾 吉晴 ate a rolled sushi (makizushi) on the evening before the battle and then the warriors won the battle. So now it is eaten to bring good luck when driving out the demons of Setsubun.

Others say it comes from Osaka and the Kansai area, where rolled sushi was eaten hoping for prosperity in the coming year.

eho paint.jpg

If you are visiting Japan and want to eat an ehomaki on February 3rd, you can buy them in convenience stores (but better to make a reservation for that in advance, because they could be sold out) or on sushi shops! ^^

ehom viele.jpg

Wish you a great setsubun! ^^

Caution! Flying beans around! Setsubun is coming :D

Hello together,

one day before the start of spring, on February the 3rd, here in Japan
Setsubun (節分)
will take place.

Setsubun, what originally means "seasonal division", nowadays is called the bean-throwing Festival or bean-throwing Ceremony, which is my topic for today :)

So on Setsubun, roasted soybeans, which are called 大豆(daizu), will be thrown through the air.

setsubeansp.jpg

This bean throwing ritual is called 豆まき(mamemaki).

The people, who are throwing the beans, will shouting
鬼は外!福は内!(Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!),
what means
"Demons out! Good luck in!".

This will get rid of bad luck and invite in good luck.

For that, the beans will thrown against people, who are wearing an oni costume.
Oni (鬼) are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls.

oni setsubun.jpg

Because of this special event, the beans are not longer just daizo (= soy beans), they will be called fuku mame (fortune beans) on this day and you can buy them in most of the stores. ^^

Setsubun beans.jpg

So it is also believed, that people can be healthy and happy, if they pick up and eat the thrown fuku mame.
You should eat so many fuku mame equal to the number of your age!
So I had to eat a lot of beans :D

A lot of shrines or temples hold a mamemaki throwing soybeans event.

Some of the big shrines or temples have celebrities, such as popular sumo wrestlers or Kabuki actors, as guests to throw beans to crowds.

sestubun sensoji.jpg

Traditionally, people in Japan not only visit temples/shrines on Setsubun, but also perform bean throwing at home to drive away bad lucks and invite happiness into their houses.

One person (usually the father ^^) wears then an oni demon mask and the rest of the family throw beans at that person.

setsubun home 2.gif

If I imagine, to hold this ritual with my family in Germany, that would be really fun! ^^
Children surely would love that :D

setsubun home.jpg

So if you want to experience Setsubun here in Japan - this event is held
on February 3rd at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM
in Sensoji Temple
only two minutes walk away from our Hostel.

sestubun oni 2.jpg

I hope, you will enjoy that special, traditional event and get all the demons away from you! ^^

And might be better not to wear only red on that day! :D

Minyo & Shamisen Concert - great music, great experience! ^^

Hello together,

yesterday, a Minyo and Shamisen Concert was hold at our Hostel.

Minyo is a genre of traditional Japanese music - it describes the Japanese folk songs, which have their own, different style pretending on which prefecture they had their origin.

Minyo songs are passed down from generation to generation and were born out of the climate and culture in various regions.

The Shamisen is a three-stringed, Japanese musical instrument played with a plectrum called a bachi.
I think, outside Japan, it's one of the most popular known instruments.

Many Shamisen songs also represent the countryside' s landscape.

民謡.jpg

So as I never hear Minyo songs and a Shamisen live before, I was very curious about the concert. ^^

But first, we had some work to do, to make this concert and the after-show-party as wonderful as possible! :)

Johrel-san prepared really nice food for the party! ^^

DSCF0949.JPG

Naoto-san made the stage clear and doing the sound check! ^^

DSCF0961.JPG

Agu-san was our bar-woman, did a great job and mixed the best Samurai Cocktails ever! ^^

DSCF0968.JPG

Then the concert starts, yippie :D

DSCF0994.JPG

DSCF1004.JPG

Before every song, we get an introduction about the following song and it was shown on the map, to which prefecture the songs origins belong to.
That was totally great, so for me as an non-Japanese, it was totally heplful and interesting, to know more about every song.
Great work! ^^

DSCF0972.JPG

The singer Kazuse-san, the Shamisen player Taiyo-san and their nice moderator really made a great concert! :)

IMG_4650.JPG

IMG_4662.JPG

DSCF0991.JPG

They were singing around 12 songs, as I could remember from different prefectures.

For me, it was really great, to listen to this different kind of music, as the used tonal system in Japanese Minyo music differs from the western one. So it sounds really, really Japanese for me...and that was great. ^^

After performing songs, we sang one really popular Minyo song together. ^^
It's called "Kokiriko Bushi".

DSCF1010.JPG

That was fun, hehe! But it wasn't as easy, as it may look. The Japanese used in Minyo songs is ancient Japanese, which is even for Japanese people sometimes hard to understand. ^^

And when we had a little training in singing it, one should go to the stage and sing it together! ^^

Wah, as everyone seems to shy, Tomo-san should sing...and then me too...but, hehe, I took my boyfriend with me :p
So we three sang together, giving our best in not singing wrong (but I'm for me not sure, if it worked ^^). :D

DSCF1011.JPG

That was really cool! ^^

Later we had the chance, to ask the musicians questions.
That was so nice, because when you're curious, then it's a good and rare chance, to ask the musicians directly! ^^

It was the groups first concert and I hope, many of them will follow!
They will record a Minyo album soon in the future together and I'm sure, it'll be great! ^^

Not only the music and the performance were really great and fascinating yesterday, it's also in my thinking important, to preserve this traditional music and let it keep in mind through such great concerts. :)

Thank you very much for that concert and to let us experience this kind of wonderful music!

After the concert, we had a nice sit together and drink some more drinks.
And we could eat soooo many totally yummy food.

DSCF1043.JPG

Tomoyuki-sans green macha cake! ^^ Great job! ^^

IMG_4668.JPG

And look, what Johrel-san prepared! ^^ Delicious! ^^

IMG_4666.JPG

IMG_4667.JPG

And of course we had many things more (I loved the panda pan, hihi).

IMG_4670.JPG

So we sit together, all talking and have much fun in great atmosphere.

DSCF1037.JPG

This evening was really so nice, traditional, great, wonderful and an experience more, I don't want to miss! ^^

Thank you for sharing this evening with us! :)

A Happy New Year in China !!

Do you know what day it is today (January 23rd) ?? It's Lunar New Year in China !!

It's for 1st of January in the Lunar calendar.
From 23rd to 25th, they celebrate it by shooting fireworks, beating drums, exploding firecrackers and so on.
They also have so many performances on streets wearing Chinese dress, dancing with Dragon shaped something.
Especially the fireworks are held on a much larger scales than those of Japan.

dannsu.jpg

竜舞.jpg

竜舞2.jpg hanabi 2.jpg 水中竜舞.jpg

People go back to their houses and spend these days with their families.
That's the same as Japanese New Year days.

But, look at these pictures !! These are the situation people are waiting for buying train tickets.
And inside the train, people are sitting on the aisle.
Japanese rush on the platforms is also crazy, but this is more.

キセイラッシュ.jpg

車内.jpg

And even in Japan, at Yokohama Chinese town, people celebrate it, too.
Many events are held there as if there was real China !!

chinese.jpg

They will have special dishes on these days.
As we Japanese have Osechi Ryori, they have their own Osechi Ryori.
It depends on their home and where they live.
One of the important things is, rice cake, there are some kinds, triangle, stick type and etc・・・
But the common meanings they have are to be rich and to have good luck in the year.

金餅.jpg

金餅 2.jpg

These celebrations last at least for 3 days.
When you have a chance, why don't you go to China and experience their most important day ?

Weekly series: "Pssst. Now our guests are speaking!" This week: Gema from Mexico! ^^

Hello together,

here's our weekly series
"Pssst. Now our guests are speaking!"
once more (Friday, Friday, already Friday *sing* ^^).

So once a week, we want to give you the chance to read more about what our guests are thinking and what they want to recommend to you, our readers. ^^

This week, we have such a really lovely guest for our interview (it was a great interview)! ^^

It's Gema from Mexico! ^^

DSCF0929.JPG

Gema is 30 years old and stays here for 6 days! ^^

Look at this soooo cute school bag, Gema has bought here. Really so cute, hihi.

DSCF0930.JPG

Since she was 12, Gema dreamed about coming to Japan :)
She's really into anime and manga - so her favourite anime series is "Evangelion" and she loves all the Ghibli movies.
And her favourite Ghibli movie is "Howl's moving castle" (if you don't know that movie, you really should watch it). ^^

Howls-moving-castleposter.jpg

Gema likes video games, too! She even has more than one game console at home (I totally can understand that ^^), she likes adventure games, first person shooter and dancing games. ^^

Of course, I asked Gema, what she likes the most about Japan and Tokyo and she told me, that "the people here are so nice, educated and clever, so original and have the 'Hiroshima spirit', so they never give up." And that enspires her, never to give up, too. Wow, that are really great thoughts, I think.
She likes it, that the streets here and everything in Japan is so clean.
And she loves it, to stand up early and to see, how this big city starts up.

What place she recommended to our future guests and Tokyo visitors, which they shouldn't miss?

Gema recommended Tokyo Tower - because you can see the whole Tokyo in one time (and the girls in the elevator with their uniforms are so nice, hihi).

Tokyo-Tower-at-night.jpg

Furthermore, Gema recommends the Senso-ji Temple, because "you can do all the rituals and traditional things there...you can feel some spiritual contact, which let you feel at home."

(At Senso-ji you can not only pray, you can for example get your fortune there or get in touch with the healing powers of the holy incense/smoke).

Sensoji-8-01111.JPG

And Gema went to a Bar/restaurant in Shinjuku, which was on an upper floor. She couldn't remember the name, but for her it was really great, it was full of lights and you could feel the city atmosphere around you.

(There are many nice upper floor bars in Shinjuku, where you could go in the evening - maybe it could look like in this picture from 24th floor. ^^).

view-from-upper-floor shinj.jpg

For all our female readers, Gema has a special insider tip, where you could go. ^^
It's called "NailBar" and is located in the mall in Ginza station.

nailbar.JPG

They do really great hands care there, manicure, uses special oils and do hand massage.
Gema liked it very much, they are really specialists there, it was totally relaxing and everything was so nice and pretty there (the girls, the smell and everything ^^).
If you want more information, I found this link here (and I'm sorry, they have no English homepage)

I asked Gema, if she experienced some funny things right now, while staying in Tokyo.
So her answer was "The Sumo Tour" - because it was really so much fun for her! ^^

IMG_4364.JPG

She was screaming a lot, cause she was so much into it.
It was so much fun and she enjoyed walking to and back very much, too. ^^

Gema made us a present after the interview - just look! ^^
Isn't that really great!
We love it! :)

Gema Paint bearb.JPG

Looking so cute and Gema is really so talented :)
Finished this picture under 5 minutes and I only thought "WOW!".
Aren't we looking so cute! ^^ I wish, I could draw like Gema. Totally great! :)

If you want to know more, Gema started her own blog and will upload more of her pictures in the future. ^^
So just click HERE!

-----

Gema has a message for all you readers and hopefully future Japan visitors. ^^

"Once in your life you have to come to Japan and if you do so, don't miss the Asakusa Hostel experience!"

-----

Thank you so much, dear Gema (and once again, we really didn't pay for that! :D )

And of course, I have a message for you, too.

Thank you for that great interview!
I enjoyed it so much talking with you :)

CIMG0852.JPG

Stay the heartwarming and lovely person, you are and make the people smile like me! :)

Weekly series: "Pssst. Now our guests are speaking!" This week: Toufik and El Hadi from Algeria! ^^

Hello together,

tadaaa...here's our weekly series
"Pssst. Now our guests are speaking!"
(it's Friday again! ^^).

So once a week, we want to give you the chance to read more about what our guests are thinking and what they want to recommend to you, our readers. ^^

This week, we have two guests!

They belong to a group of so lovely guests from Algeria, we will never forget.

ALGE0001.GIF

Here are Toufik and El Hadi from Algeria! ^^
On the picture, they are the nice guys in the second row from the left (Toufik) and in the middle of second row (El Hadi). ^^

DSCF0892.jpg

Toufik is 27 years and El Hadi 28 years old.
For tourism they stayed for 14 days in Tokyo and our Hostel. ^^

The most, they liked about Japan were the kindness of the people here and the food...so El Hadi likes Sushi the most.

So which places you shouldn't miss? ^^

Toufik recommends the Meiji Temple, Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Tower, the Nakano Broadway and the Shibuya crossing as a must see. ^^

Meiji

Nakano Broadway

Shibuya Crossing

And El Hadi recommends the Meiji Temple and Shibuya, too.
And the Imperial Palace Garden! ^^

Imperial Palace Garden
Tokyo_Imperial_Palace_Garden.jpg

And they have a really good insider tip for a bar you should go (especially for One Piece fans)! ^^

It's the One Piece Marine Ford Bar in Shinjuku!

Banner Bar.jpg

Toufik told me, that this One Piece Bar is really very underground and cool with an impressive atmosphere.
You can feel like completely merged in the ambience of One Piece! ^^
Sounds great, right!
For more information about this bar (and it seems like they didn't have a homepage but I found something ^^), just click HERE and HERE^^

I've asked, if they've experienced some funny things or something funny to tell about their trip.

El Hadi writes me "The New Year Celebration in Shibuya". ^^
And Toufik told me, that just after midnight, all the Japanese people became more closer to foreigners and they were singing and screaming all together celebrating the New Year. ^^
That sounds really great! :)
So maybe if you'll be here on New Years Eve you can have much fun there! ^^

Toufik later told me another funny story and laughed much while telling me. :D
He went to a Game station and played against a Japanese boy (he didn't know before).
They played a fighting game. ^^
This boy lost 5 times in a row and really get upset then.
So he called his friend, a professional in this game and he then defeated Toufik with the first try.
But it sounds like they had really fun and a great time together! ^^

----------

El Hadis message to you and all our readers:

"We recommend this Hostel! Don't hesitate, you will not be disappointed :)"

Thank you, El Hadi, that's really nice from you! ^^ (Nooo, we didn't pay anyone!)

And Toufiks message to you is:

"Don't hesitate! Come here! Judge by yourself the kindness of this seemingly "strange" country. You will feel more comfortable here than in your own country! And the cost of life is less than in Europe."

----------

And we have a message for you lovely guests, too:

Thank you very very much for your stay here at our Hostel and this totally nice souvenirs you brought for us this long way from Algeria to Japan! ^^ That was so totally kind from you and we enjoyed these cakes so much! ^^

CIMG0123.JPG

CIMG0124.JPG

You were really great guests and we have a good time together!
Thank you for this totally nice party evening and your every time gentleness and positive way! :)

We really hope, to see you again!
Thank you so much! :)

Take care and have a great time! :)

Japanese fairy tail: Animal competition for Eto (Chinese astrology)

Hi ! This is Tomoyuki
A Happy New Year !! Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu (*゚▽゚)/゚・:*【祝 2012】*:・゚?(゚▽゚*)

Do you know we have twelve Eto in each year ?
Eto is called Junishi (十二支), and they are all animals.

They are (ne; Mouse),(ushi; Cow) (tora;Tiger),(u; Rabbit) (tastu; Dragon), (mi;Snake),(uma;Horse),(hituji; Sheep),(saru;Monkey),(tori; Hen),(inu; Dog),and (i; Wild boar)

12支.jpg

And This is the Year of the Dragon in Chinese astrology.

tatu.jpg

Do you wonder why are these animals ??
We have a fairy tail for that reason.

Once upon a time, at the end of a year, The god told all of animals like this.
"Come to see me in the morning of the New Year (Jan 1st), and I will let the first 12 animals be the symbol animals of the year in order.
Each animal was excited about that, but a cat forgot when he should go to see The god.
He asked it to Mouse, and he lied." you should go on the second of January".
Cat trusted Mouse completely and went back home to sleep.
In the morning of 1st of Jan, Cow departed his house at mid night.
" I am the slowest animal,so I have to depart much earlier than any.
Mouse was listening to it on the ceiling and rode on the head of Cow slyly.

When Cow arrived at the gate of the place where The god was, no one had arrived yet.
Cow was about to greeting The god, but Mouse got off from his head and greeted at first.
As a result, Mouse greeted at first, then secondly Cow.
And continued trot Tiger and Rabbit, Dragon, Snake who crawled on ground, Horse and Sheep.
Dog and Monkey fought on the way to go, and Hen came with stopping them together.
Though Wild boar came before Tiger, he couldn't stop himself and passed the gate.

usagi.jpg

Finally, the order they arrived was Mouse,Cow,Tiger,Rabbit,Dragon,Snake,Horse,Sheep, Monkey,Hen,Dog,and Wild boar.
The god told them to protect humans from evil things of the years.

On the other hand, Cat knew that he had been deceived by Mouse after this competition.
He got really angry, and had a grudge against Mouse.
It is said that this is the origin Cats chase mice now.

By the way, I was born in the Year of Tiger (1986).

tora.jpg

What is the animals of the Year when you were born ??

New Year's Eve in Japan (and in Germany)! ^^

Hello together,

This day is the last day of the year 2011. ^^

Something magical is in the air and everyone can feel it! ^^

For me it's my first New Year's Eve here in Japan, so I'm really curious, how my year 2011 will end today! ^^

So, how do the Japanese celebrate New Year's Eve?

This last day of the year is called Ōmisoka (大晦日) and is a preparation day to welcome toshigami (年神), the new year's god. It's the second important day of the year for Japanese people (New Year's Day tomorrow is the most important one ^^)!

An important Japanese end-of-year custom is Oosoji which means extensive cleaning. So people clean their home...like we do oosoji at our hostel! ^^ But we're all in great mood! ^^

Around 11:00 pm on Ōmisoka at home, people often gather for one last time in the old year to have a bowl of toshikoshi-soba (年越しそば) or toshikoshi-udon (年越しうどん) together - a tradition based on people's association of eating the long noodles with "crossing over from one year to the next,". So eating this "New Year's Eve Noodles" is very common.

Ramen.jpg

Traditionally, families make Osechi (おせち) for new year day because cooking during the first 3 days of the new year is not a good thing for Kami of kitchens. But nowadays, most of families buy Osechi or cook ordinary dishes.

Osechi.jpg

Osechi2.jpg

Another regular feature of Ōmisoka starts at 7:30 pm when public broadcaster NHK airs Kōhaku Uta Gassen ("Red vs White singing contest"), one of the country's most-watched television programs. Kōhaku Uta Gassen is a 60-year-old tradition, on which popular singers and groups split into two teams, women in the red team and men in the white. Then they compete for the audience's heart throughout the evening.^^ This program ends at about 11:45 pm. Programming then switches to coverage of midnight celebrations around the country.

Gassen 1.jpg

Gassen 2.jpg

We want to watch Kōhaku Uta Gassen at our TV in the lobby, too. ^^
Woah, I'm happy to get that chance! ^^

At midnight, when the New Year begins, in all Buddhist temples over Japan their large cast bell is struck once for each of the 108 earthly desires believed to cause human suffering. This tradition is called joya no kane (除夜の鐘) which means "bell rings on new year eve's night."

Bell 1.jpg

Bell 2.jpg

So at midnight, many people visit a shrine or temple for Hatsumōde (初詣). Hatsumode, the first shrine or temple visit of the New Year in Japan is called.

Htsumode1.jpg

Here in Japan it's unusual, to have big fireworks or some big party celebration, so the people celebrate traditional and quiet with their families.

The New Year's celebration is not over after midnight. January, the 1st is a National Holiday and most of the people have off until January the 4th. So post offices and banks, for example, are closed.

For Japanese, as you can see, New Year's Eve is very traditional (for me, it's really complex, to understand all of this traditions) and an absolute really important day for families.

--------------------

But to fulfill the wish of one of our really nice tweeters ;) I want to write a little bit about how we celebrate New Year's Eve in my home country Germany, too. It's called Silvester in Germany and seems really totally different to Japanese New Year's Eve! ^^

The last day of the year many stores have open like on normal days (but not so long, only until around 2 pm) and everyone tells you the whole day, what he or she will do in the evening. ^^ So everyone is curious...because in Germany New Year's eve means to party.

You may have a nice day with your family and maybe party with your family into the New Year, but this day is not mandatory a family day.

So it's more common to go to a private party or go out to a club with some friends, your girl-/boyfriend or date and dancing and partying until 10 to 20 minutes before midnight.

2011-12-31-silvester-ballroom-party-berlin.jpg

Then you go outside and waiting until midnight (it's very cold in Germany at this time of the year). Time for countdown! ^^ When the New Year has arrived us, we say cheers to everyone around us with champagne/sekt/sparkling wine and wishing everyone a great New Year. The couples share their first New Years kisses and everyone is watching (or doing) fireworks.

brandenburger_tor_sekt_parchen.jpg

feuerwerk-2011.jpg

Some champagnes and fireworks later, the party goes on.

There's no special New Year's dish in Germany, but as often many people celebrate together at home for private party, the most common dishes for Silvester (that's the German name for New Year's Eve) eat Fondue or Raclette (it's no traditional German dish but great for eating with many people ^^). At clubs, there's often a special entrance fee, which included champagne and buffet. On this picture you see a combination of fondue and raclette in one machine. That's usual, too. ^^

RatgeberSilvester2011R.jpg

In Berlin, where I've lived the last years before coming to Japan, many many many (maybe more than a million) people go to the Brandenburger Tor and celebrate together (but for me it was always to cold ^^).

bb tor.jpg

Ah, and I almost forget...if we party at home (or at someones home), it's tradition (especially for older people...I've to watch that EVERY year as a child) to watch this old comedy thing "Dinner for one". It's from 1963...and the same procedure as every year. You can watch it here! ^^

And often we do "Bleigiessen", which involves telling fortunes by the shapes made by molten lead dropped into cold water. ^^ But I never could see something in the shape of my "Blei". ^^

blei.jpg

You see, New Year's Eve can be really different from country to country.
In one country traditional and quiet, in the other party and not so deep traditional. ^^

So how do you celebrate New Year's Eve in your home country?

I hope, you will have a great New Year's Eve and of course a great New Year 2012!

Happy_New_Year_OHT_2012.jpg

All your wishes should come true and all the bad things should be catched far far away in the last year! ^^

So, let's give our best in 2012, right!

Ganbatte! ^^

The Sapporo Snow Festival

Hello to everybody!

How are you today? Hope everything is going well^^

Today I would like to talk about one of the most famous winter festival in Sapporo.

sapporo_snow_festival.jpg

This festival is also know as Sapporo Yuki Matsuri, and will take place next 6th of February. The statues are located in the Odori park, Satoland and the Susukino's main street.

It's said that this popular event was born in 1950, when 6 high school students built 6 snow statues in the Odori park. Then, in 1955, the Japanese military army will join the event building big statues and becoming in a really famous festival.

Don't you think these pictures are amazing? ^^

Do you have your Omamori?

A few months ago I visited the famous Todaiji temple in Nara, one of the most important temples Japan. Nara is a place that I really recommend to visit if you have a chance^^

4100_01.jpg

There is where I bought my Omamori!!

Omamori comes from the verb Mamoru which means to protect, defend and guard.

So this is the name given to a kind of amulet made of fabric that is sold in the Japanese temples. It's belief that these amulets avoid accidents, illnesses, and also can help you with love or passing the exams. Japanese people carry these omamori in many places, like pockets, bags, in the car or even on your mobile. I carry mine in my wallet, and always take it with me.

KendoOmamori.jpg

Outside it's a kind of bag called omamori-bukuro and is usually brightly colored and the name of the temple where you buy it is also written on it. Inside, they have a small paper with the name of the god that will protects you and a prayer written by a monk. If the bag of your omamori is opened and its interior is exposed to the outside, the protection would finish and you would have to buy a new one to be protected. Even an omamori would be effective for all your life, it is common to buy a new one in New Year. In these cases, you have to burn the old omamori.

There are diferent kinds of omamori, we have the general omamori for a general protection, or specific omamori, which have a specific god that gives you a specific protection.

Omamori-Japanese Amulet.jpg

For example, you can buy one for pregnant women, that is called mamori Anzano, that will help you to have your baby without troubles.

To have with luck in love, the enmusubi omamori will help you to find love, to keep the couple or have a successful marriage.

Another option for those who are studying should buy the Gakugyojoju omamori.

Did you decided which one you would buy? Or are you planning to buy more than one??

Nihonshu??:))

Have you ever drunk Nihonshu? Someone may not know what I'm talking about, but the thing is different if I talk about Sake:))

The sake (酒) is a Japanese word meaning "alcoholic beverage", but in Western countries we refer to the type of Japanese alcoholic beverage made from rice, and known in Japan as nihonshu (日本 酒 "Japanese spirit "). So if you come to Japan, you should order nihonshu instead of sake if you want to drink the rice alcoholic drink.

There are 4 basic types of sake called honjozo-shu (本醸造), junmai-shu (純米酒), ginjo-shu (吟醸酒) y daiginjo-shu (大吟醸酒).

nihonshu.jpg

In Japan sake is served chilled, at room temperature, or heated, depending on the preference of the drinker, the quality of the sake, and the season. Typically, hot sake is a winter drink, and high-grade sake is not drunk hot, because the flavors and aromas will be lost.

Have you ever drink in a masu cup? This is a box usually made of hinoki or sugi, which was originally used for measuring rice. In some Japanese restaurants, as a show of generosity, the server may put a glass inside the masu or put the masu on a saucer and pour until sake overflows and fills both containers.

masu.JPG

Another curious thing that you can find around some temples is this sake barrels, that are considered as a gift. When I saw them at the first time, I imagine they could be so many things, but never that they store sake^^

temple.jpg

Do you like Sake? If so, Do you have any preference? I am curious^^

Yakiimo; a baked sweet potato with stones.

It's Winter ! We need something to make ourselves warm.
In such a cold season, we can see cars like this at many places.

屋台.jpg

Do you know what they are doing ? just driving a car ? no, they are selling a thing.
It's Yakiimo ! a typical Japanese hot snack in winter.
What is Yakiimo ? It's sweet potatoes baked in burn stones.
The car has a big oven with stones.
The seller put sweet potatoes in it, and bake.
And they sell the potatoes with shouting " Ishiyakiimo-------" it is sold by 400 to 500 yen.
Freshly baked ones are really delicious !! hot, sweet, melting and creamy !

I especially recommend Annou imo (Annou sweet potato).

焼き芋.jpg

This potato has another name; Mitu imo (Syrup potato).
This potato has much more syrup in it than any other kinds.
When we bake it, the syrup comes out from inside.

mituimo.jpg

Its sweetness has been attracting many people especially female.
You can't stop eating once you try it ヾ(≧∇≦)ゞ
Do you want to eat Yakiimo ? OK, let's hang out and find that car ! レ(゚∀゚;)ヘ=З=З=З
Enjoy your Yakiimo !

Which do you like the best ?

It has been colder since it became December in Japan.
What do you eat for such cold days in your countries ?
The popular food in Japan in winter is Nabe dishes (Nabe).
Nabe is an earthen pot dish in which some ingredients are cooked together.
The popular contents for Nabe are as follows below.

vegetables: Chinese cabbage, carrot, green onion,Garland chrysanthemum(shungiku), mushrooms, leek
Meat: pork, beef, chicken
Fish and shellfish: salmon, oyster, cod, crab, scallop
others: egg, tofu, etc.......

Have you ever cooked Nabe ? It's really easy !! Just two steps.

1:chop the ingredients and put them in a pot.
2:boil them and taste in it.

These are so helpful for tasting.
But please taste them as you want. They usually use salt, soy sauce, and miso.

ゴマ.jpg                キムチの素.jpg

There is a large variety of Nabe dishes in Japan.
Here are examples our staff like.

Agu and Naoto like Kimchi nabe, Korean taste one tasted with Kimchi.
It is hot and spicy !! But the most popular one in Japan (I guess)

キムチ2.jpg

Hiro likes Chanko-nabe(Sumo wrestler nabe)
Chanko-nabe is a dish in which many nutritious foods are cooked together and tasted with miso(mostly).

ちゃんこ2.jpg

I (Tomoyuki) like Kakino dote nabe(Oyster nabe tasted miso)
This nabe is a little different from others that we make bank of miso at the edge of the pot before we put the ingredients.
Then we eat it with melting the miso.

牡蠣の土手鍋.jpg

Johrel likes Tomato nabe.
This nabe is a kind of new, we put tomato there and taste.

トマト4.jpg

And Tomo likes the most simple one Mizutaki-nabe.
This is not tasted, so you can put anything on the ingredients after being boiled.

Which is your favourite ? Enjoy your Nabe life in Japan !! ヽ(〃'▽'〃)ノ☆

The best dish for these cold days: Sukiaki;))

Have you ever tried the Sukiaki?

4094742289_e0e4eeeba6.jpg

Sukiaki is a kind of nabe. Nabe (means pot in Japanese) is how the stew dishes are called in Japan. Nowadays, It's so cold that this delicious dishes become even more tasty^^
El Sukiaki es un tipo de Nabe. Nabe (que significa pota en Japones) se le llama a cualquier variedad de plato guisado Japones. Estos platos son muy típicos ahora que llega el invierno.

If you see the receipt you can see it's not difficult at all:

- 250 gr. Of beef cut as finely as possible.
- 1 leek cut in cubes.
- 1 carrot, chopped.
- 1 / 2 Chinese cabbage.
- Variety of mushrooms. The most popular and also my recommendation are the Shiitake and enokidade.
- Fresh Tofu.
- Soy sauce.
- Olive oil.

These are the ingredients:

4062425945_63c5a55dbf.jpg4062431175_9b311685ea.jpg

The first step would be preparing a pot with a little bit of olive oil, and then fry the meat. While the meat is being frying, introduce the soya sauce and gradually add all the vegetables into the pot.

Normally, this dish is eaten pouring everything into row egg. When I saw it the first time, I was afraid I wouldn't like it since it's was the first I ate row egg, but the taste was so amazing that nowadays it's one of my favorite dishes.

huevo.jpg

Have you ever eaten or cooking? How was the experience?
I encouradge to all of you to try this dish, I'm sure you will like it;)

Sandwiches Art ??

What shape do you come up when you are asked "sandwiches".?
Most people will answer "It's rectangular, triangle, round or rolled bread and some ingredients are put between them."
Yes, that's usual.

サンド.jpg

But I found some artistic and strange ones on a web site Insane sandwiches
You can see creative ones there.

For example.....

1: Neck tie

neck.jpg

2:Mobile phone

kei.jpg

3: Rubik cube

r.jpg

4: Guitar

5: Hand with blood

te.jpg

If you want to see more, please go Insane sandwiches
I think the normal shape sandwiches are enough for me.
Human makes everything art with various things.
Art made of food can please us, but I hope the rest of food (like edge of bread)
are also eaten by someone.
If not, it's waste of foods.

Making art works is OK, but it's also important how treat the rest of food after they make.
We mustn't forget it.

Special foods in Autumn in Japan

Now Autumn has come in earnest recently.
We have various seasonal foods in Japan in Autumn.
I will introduce some, and dishes with them.

1: Chestnuts
栗.jpg
You don't need an explanation what chestnut is.How do you cook them?cake, pie,or cream?
Japanese cook them for Kurigohan(rice mixed with chestnuts)
They enjoy natural sweet and texture of chestnuts.

くりご飯.jpg

2: Pacific saury サンマ.jpg
This fish is written 秋刀魚in kanji. If we translate these kanji,秋means Autumn, 刀does sword, and 魚does fish.
So as these indicate, this fish is well caught and delicious in Autumn with just enough fat !!
How Japanese eat it ?? we eat sashimi, sushi, and broiled with salt !
When you eat as sashimi, it's fat melts on your tongue and feel the taste spreading all over your mouth.
When you eat as broiled with salt, we recommend eating with grated radish and soy sauce !
Some times people squeeze lemon or citrus sudachi on it and have refreshing taste.

Sashimi

Broiled with salt
秋味覚~1.JPG

You can enjoy them at restaurants.
Of course, they are just a part of seasonal foods in Autumn in Japan.
We have many other delicious foods.
Let's enjoy Japanese Autumn foods together shall we ?

No,1 photo and colored leaves

As we let you know, we had Tokyo photo contest from June through July.
The participants sent us many many pictures taken in Tokyo in past.

And the result is informed on our Facebook page.
But, we will let you know again who won the No,1.
It was Mr.Asa Ellison !!
He stays at our hostel and is our repeater.
He likes taking photos and sometimes sends us some beautiful pictures.

Look !!

紅葉.jpg

It's very beautiful isn't it ?!
We got his comment below.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Hello

I've been traveling to Japan for many years but I've only become a regular photographer a few years ago.
I always enjoy staying at the Asakusa Sakura Hostel. The staff there is so kind and helpful.

Since Japan has 4 distinct seasons, I've been wanting to get pictures of Japan during each season. In December of 2010, I traveled to Japan to take pictures of the Fall colors. It was my first trip to Japan to see the beautiful colors at the Shrines and Temples. On Dec 2, 2010, I met a friend at the Harajuku station and we walked through the Meiji Shrine area and gardens. It was a nice sunny day and the air was cool. As we walked through the park, I fell in love with all the red, orange, and yellow colors of the trees. It was a side of Japan that I had never seen. I'm so amazed how I can go to a place I've been to many times, yet it is different every time.

When I saw a post on Facebook about the photo contest, I thought for a while about what kind of picture to submit. I looked at a few of the early submissions. Many of them showed the big buildings of Shinjuku or the electric colors of Akihabara. I realized that had some pictures which were very different from the other pictures so I decided to submit the picture taken in the garden at Meiji. It captures the traditional side of Japan of the old days. It is a side of Japan not often seen in the big city of Tokyo. Meiji is a special island of old Japan in the middle of the city.
I really loved it and wanted to share it with everyone.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Talking of Autumn, most tree of leaves will turn to yellow, orange, and red in October to November.
Colored leaves are lighted up at many places in Tokyo, and let us enjoy seeing them.
This is famous Japanese garden Rikugien.

It's Autumn in Japan ! why don't you coming to Tokyo, and enjoy the seasonal foods and views? (゚▽゚)

Do you believe superstitions ?

blackcat.jpg

There are a lot of superstitions in Japan.

For example...

"When you see a funeral car, hide your thummbs."
"If you cut your nails at night, you will not be with your parents when they die."
"Hide your bellybutton if you hear thunder, or the god of thunder will steal your bellybutton."

And so on.

There are reasons for each superstitions.

"When you see a funeral car, hide your thummbs."

reikyusya.jpg

There is a dead body in the funeral car.
To point at it is bad manners.

"If you cut your nails at night, you will not be with your parents when they die."

tsumekiri.jpg

Long ago, there wasn't enough light.
People use candles.
if they cut their nails in the dark, they might have cut themselves and can't work.

"Hide your bellybutton if you hear thunder, or the god of thunder will steal your bellybutton."

heso.JPG

If it thunders, it will rain hard also.
And the temperature will drop rapidly.
So, you have to wear warm clothes as to not catch a cold.

I understand these.
However, I have one superstition that I can't understand.

"You can eat food off the floor if it's less than three seconds"

3seconds.gif

We call it "the three second rule".
Nobody does it now.

I think that it means "Don't cast away foods".
However, I can't understand why it became popular.

If you find a child doing it in Japan, please don't think "Japanese are crazy!"

I-phone customize

Now that you know I-phone is used by soooo many people all over the world.
It is one of common sense to have a smart phone for business or private.
But most I-phones are the same colors; black or white.
People express their originality by putting many kinds of covers on them.
But even you put the cases on them, the inside is still the same; black or white.
My co-worker let me know that there is an I-phone customize shop in Akihabara.
According to him, we can choose favourite front, middle, back frames and buttons, then ask the staff to customize.
I went there in practice and had the back frame customized.

The name of the shop is S/MART !

First, choose the parts and color you want to change.
There were many colors. look ! this website
Secondly, ask the staff if the color is available. if it's OK, fill out the document.
Then finally, give your I-phone to the staff and wait for finish.

It takes about 2 hours for exchanging the back plates.
And it takes about 3 hours for exchanging the front plates.
According to the staff, you can do it by yourself on condition you have a special screwdriver.

screw.jpg

But I don't recommend it, because it seemed difficult !!
After 2 hours, I got my new I-phone. I chose white and skeleton frame.
The batteries and others are seen.

                        Before                                                   After

黒.jpg      Iphone.jpg

How do you like it ? The blue part is a cover.
It costed about 7,000yen.
I can't say it's reasonable, but if you have any chance, why don't you make your original customized I-phone?

Tokyo Awa Dance in Koenji

Have you ever heard Awa odori (Awa Dance)? It originally derived from Tokushima prefecture in Japan.
Awa is the old name of Tokushima prefecture.
The original Awa odori has 400 year history. And more than 1300,000 people visit there to see it.
There are 2 types of dance in Awa odori, Men dance and Women dance.

For the men's dance: right foot and right arm forward, touch the ground with toes, then step with right foot crossing over left leg. This is then repeated with the left leg and arm. Whilst doing this, the hands draw triangles in the air with a flick of the wrists, starting at different points. Men dance in a low crouch with knees pointing outwards and arms held above the shoulders. 阿波.jpg The women's dance uses the same basic steps, although the posture is quite different. The restrictive kimono allows only the smallest of steps forward but a crisp kick behind, and the hand gestures are more restrained and graceful, reaching up towards the sky. Women usually dance in tight formation, poised on the ends of their geta sandals.

阿波2.jpg

They are beautiful aren't they ?
This dance have spread to many districts in Japan, and one of them will be held as follows below

Place: Tokyo Koenji
Date : August 27th and 28th
Time : 15:00~18:00

check the web site here
About 150 dance groups will join the festival.

The dances are performed following this song

踊る阿呆に Odoru ahou ni →The dancers are fools
見る阿呆 Miru ahou →The watchers are fools
同じ阿呆なら Onaji ahou nara→ Both are fools alike so
踊らな損、損 Odorana son, son →Why not dance?

I'm sure you can enjoy this traditional Japanese dance v('▽^*)

Handmade sweets

What do you like to do when you have enough money and time ? Travel to somewhere? Buy something expensive, or hang out for eating ?
I surely like to do that above, but especially like to make sweets.
Usually we buy them at department stores and sweets shops.
But they are sometimes stiff and dry, or too sweet for me.
The advantages for hand made are that we can adjust the sweetness and arrange the recipe.
I don't like too sweet, so I put less sugar than that in original recipe.
My favourite cake is chocolate cake with whipped cream and simple cakes.
I usually bake this cake for my tea time and share with my families, friends and co-workers.
Here some sweets I made.

Caramel and honey Financier             Chocolate cake with whipped cream

       フィナンシェ.jpg           tyoko.jpg

The other I make are rare cheese cake, baked cheese cake, cream puff, pound cake, fruit tart, apple and pumpkin pies, sweet potato, and so on.If got seasonal ingredients, I use for the sweets.

Some friends praise them that as if a professional made, and it makes me glad and happy.

Making sweets by hand is not difficult as you expect. Why don't you enjoy your tea times with your hand made cakes or sweets?

Light up NIPPON !

It has been for 5 months since the terrible disaster happened.
About 17,000 people were killed, and about 4,800 people are still missing even now.
People all over the nations have refrained from holding some events for the victims.
Many people who have missing families notify their death to the government, they don't satisfy themselves of it even after notifying. That's very pitiful.
Then last night, we had fireworks at some cities in Tohoku district for their requiem and recovery.
The name of the event was Light up NIPPON.
10 cities joined the event, and 20,000 fireworks were shot off to the sky at the same time.

花火1.jpg

Many volunteers have been to the areas and helped recovery, and thanks to them, some areas are getting usual life.
But many problems are still left.
People who saw the fireworks hoped and prayed for return of peaceful life.
The moment of the fireworks was just in a matter of seconds, but it remains in their hearts forever.
Our condolences are with all of the victims.

Fireworks in Summer

There are many outside events in Summer in Japan.
Camping, hiking, climbing mountain, swimming in the sea and playing on the beach with barbecue.
Drinking beer with edamame (green soybeans) at beer gardens.
And one of the most exciting, beautiful and artistic events, is firework.

We have many fireworks events in Japan through July to August.
The three most famous fireworks in Japan are in Oomagari (Akita prefecture), Tsuchiura (Ibaraki prefecture), and Nagaoka( Niigata prefecture).
Especially the one held in Akita is the greatest among them.
Here is the movie.

Also we have a lots of fireworks events as below at many places

【At Hokkaido

Tokachi riverside (on August 13th)

【At Tohoku district

Aomori (on August 7th, Aomori prefecture)
Sendai (on August 5th, Miyagi prefecture)

Utunomiya (on August 13th, Tochigi prefecture)
Tone river side( on August 13th, Ibaraki prefecture, my local)

I can't write all of them.
You can check this web site

Some of fireworks are decided to be off because of the earthquake on 11th of March.
Some people think they should refrain from holding events for people killed in the disaster.
But others think we should do to promote recovery and cheer Japan up.
I agree with the latter, and you ?

Why don't you come to Japan and enjoy the world famous Japanese culture in this Summer !

The latest Ghibli film

What do you come up when you are asked " what is the world famous Japanese movoie?"
Ring ? Juon ? or Poket monsters ?
I personally think it is Ghibli films.
Many famous Ghibli films have been aired and translated into English; like My neighbour Totoro, Princes Mononoke, and Spirited away.
The movies of Hayao MIyazaki are watched and popular all over the world.

Then finally, the latest Ghibli movie will be aired from this Saturday(16th) in Japan.
The title is Kokuriko-Zaka kara ( From Poppies bloom hill)
Here is the story below.

In 1963 in Yokohama.
A 16 year-old girl Umi raises up a signal flag toward the sea, which means praying for safe sailing every morning.
A 17 year-old boy Shun sees it from a tag boat on the sea every day.
With Tokyo Olympic near at hand next year, people break old things and believe that only new materials are great.
In that period, a small dispute has happened at a high school in Yokohama.
The dispute was about whether they destroy a building or preserve it.

What do you drink with curry ?

Do you like curry, or curry and rice ? Its appetizing smell and spicy and hot taste make our appetite bigger !
I personally like Thai especially red curry.

Any way, what do you drink when you eat curry ?
Studies of a consulting company surveyed it.
One was about their attitudes( which drink do you think the best for curry ?) and
, the other was conducted after eating in practice(which drink did you think the best for curry?)
Here are the results

Attitudes( 300 people answered)

No, 1: Water                 No,2: Woo long tea              No,3: Barley tea

      水.jpg         ウーロン茶.jpg            mugi.jpg

After eating curry in practice (84 people conducted)

No,1 : Woo long tea                                       No, 2: Water

        ウーロン茶.jpg                                   水.jpg

Is it the same as you expected ? Lassi and spiced tea were also ranked in, but at very lower status.

What are your favourite drinks ?

Are you feeling like eating curry now ? I am !

OK ! I will eat Thai curry and drink woo long tea tonight ! ?d(≧▽≦*)

Interesting dismantlement on top of Tokyo Sky Tree

As you know, Tokyo Sky Tree reached 634m already.
People constructed the tower using some cranes on top.
But have you ever wondered how they dismantle the cranes ? The dismantlement has started from 23rd of May.
This is how to do that.

1: adjust the height of all of the 4 cranes.
2: dismantle the cranes which are next to each other.
3: build a new smaller crane next to the last crane and dismantle it.
4: build a new smaller crane again next to the crane.
5:repeat the work above
6:Finally, dismantle the small crane by hand

It will be finished in Autumn of this year.
This is interesting isn't it !?

Ramen Ramen Ramen!!

What is your favorite food in Japan?? Sushi? Tempura? Sashimi? of course they are delicious, but our staff recommend Ramen noodles.
One study (questionnaire) in 2010 showed that Ramen is the second favorite food for foreign tourists.
By the way, the best was Sushi.
Ramen was created in Taisho period (about 100 years ago) in Japan based on Chinese style noodles.
But it was developed in original ways in Japan, so Japanese ramen is quite different from Chinese one.

At first, ramen was eaten by Tokugawa Mitsukuni (Mito koumon) in Japan.
And it is said that monks and his feudatory who had visited his retirement were served ramen.
In 1914 the oldest ramen restaurant was open at Kayabacho in Tokyo. The name is Taishoken.
Then after 1914, ramen restaurants were opened bit by bit in each area in Japan.
People had improved and finally in 1926, they made the base of present ramen noodle; soy sauce taste, topped with sliced grilled pork, green onion and menma(tasted bamboo shoot).

Now we have soooo many kinds of ramen.
Ramen is roughly divided into 4 kinds by the soup; Shoyu(soy sauce) Sio(salt), Miso(soy bean taste) and Tonkotsu(pork bone broth)

Miso ramen

豚骨.jpg

Ramen is being developed even now.
The ramen restaurant owners create new ramens that represent their shops. They change the soup, how to make noodles, ingredient on top, times they boil the noodles and so on.
We have to thanks them, thanks to their efforts, we can enjoy many types of ramen today.

Ramen also can be enjoyed in your own ways; put butter on noodle, dip in hot(cold) soup, top many ingredients like soft boiled egg, a lot of vegetables and so on.

Try and compare the tastes of ramen restaurants you go. The tastes are quite different !!!
Enjoy your ramen life and find your favorite ways for tasting and reataurants !!!

P.S.

this is my(Tomoyuki's) favorite ramen restaurant Funamizaka(located in Ginza)
They serve you Hokkaido Hakodate Sio ramen (mostly)
I love large amount of Sio ramen of this restaurant !!

My tiny and naughty family

Hello, this is Tomoyuki.
I will introduce to you about one of my family today.
He is not a human, but a very very cute animal; ferret.
Do you know what a ferret is ? It's kind of a weasel. Please read this site.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferret
They are like cats which don't grow up at all.
Ferrets play with many things such as balls, toys and stuffed animals actively in common, and so does mine.
IMG_6794.jpg

He came to my house on September 18th(my birthday) as the birthday present about 4 years ago.
We named him Ku after his cry.
He jumps and invites us to play when he wants. It is called ferret dance.
We throw a slipper, then he dashes and puts it in his mouth.
And he likes to enter our individual rooms,so he always waits for the door open

フェレット2.jpg

We heard that ferret is very clever to learn performance, thus I trained him a trivial skill.
As a result, he learnt a skill that he waggles his tail when we show him his favorite food.

After playing to his heart's content, he goes back to his cage and falls asleep.
His sleeping face is soooooo cute!!
フェレット.jpg

Some times he cries when he is sleeping, It make us heartwarming and laugh
As you cherish your dogs and cats, we love our tiny family member,
All of our family want him to be alive for a long time.
If you don't have any pets, I recommend you having a ferret.
