Kouyou - Fall foliage

Fall foliage is called "kouyou"(紅葉) in Japanese which literally means red leaves.

The kouyou season is the Fall equivalent of the hanami season in Spring.
The leaves usually take on their best colors from around the end of October to the end of November.

Here are some of the most beautiful places to visit in and around Tokyo.

  • Mount Takao - a day trip worth taking at any time of year, Mount Takao is a great place to see the Japan Fall colors.
  • Kamakura - the old capital of Japan, just a little over an hour from Tokyo. Famous for its Daibutsu (big buddha)
  • Hakone and Mount Fuji - this is one of great place to escape from the city. Stay overnight in a traditional ryokan, soak in an onsen, and enjoy the views of Mount Fuji.
  • Fuji Five Lakes - the whole area around Mount Fuji is known as Fuji Five Lakes. Besides Hakone there are areas such as Kawaguchiko with similar onsen and ryokan.
  • Nikko -located north of Tokyo and the resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu is another perfect place to catch your reds, golds, and oranges of Fall. There is a direct train from Asakusa.
