Sumo tour report - January 19th

Last Wednesday the 19th, we had a sumo tour.
The weather was perfect for walking so we had a nice walk to the sumo stadium in Ryogoku from the hostel.

When we got to the stadium, some of us went to have Chankonabe lunch near the stadium.
Chankonabe is a type of Japanese stew that contains large quantities of protein such as fish, chicken, tofu, rice, noodles... etc.

It is reasonably healthy dish and it is commonly eaten a massive quantity by sumo wrestlers to gain weight.

Our guests seemed to enjoy their chankonabe lunch!

Then we watch the sumo match. It's always exciting to watch the game as usual.

This day (January 19th) was special because the Yokozuna (highest rank in professional sumo) Hakuho lost the match and a lot of people threw seat cushions into the ring. If a yokozuna is defeated by a lower ranked wrestler, it is common and expected for audience members to throw their seat cushions into the ring.

Thanks to everyone who joined the sumo tour!

Today was the last day for sumo match in Tokyo and Hakuho won for the Tokyo grand sumo tournament!
We will have sumo tours again in May. Don't miss it!

Comment

I am kind of confused. How did Hakuho win the tournament if he lost the match? Is it scored by points?

John,
Even though Hakuho lost the match this particular day, he won most of the games for Tokyo Grand Sumo Tournament. So yes, it is scored by points as you said.
